What is Collective Impact?
Collective Impact is a model that addresses the need to gather a large number of diverse viewpoints to identify solutions capable of achieving broad consent when dealing with issues of high complexity. Collective Impact provides guidance and five elements central to achieving Inclusive Excellence, Diversity, Equity, and Community (IEDEC):
Common Agenda – CIELO-G will provide a foundation for a shared understanding of the science goals and also to the meaning of IEDEC in the context of the science goals.
Centralized Support – CIELO-G will provide personnel to form a backbone organization, responsible for helping support and carry out the common agenda.
Continuous communication – CIELO-G will foster regular, continuous communication about the common agenda (science and IEDEC) and involve multiple stakeholders in different content areas of the science goals, who are responsible for communicating information. Communication will include sharing strategies and/or establishing a common language around science and IEDEC. Continuous communication will be undertaken in email/website updates, conferences, all-hands meetings, research meetings, open houses, and special events.
Mutually reinforcing activities – CIELO-G will serve as a backbone by overseeing continuous communication with respect to mutually reinforcing activities and will include additional lead researchers within each research project. We envision different projects will encompass different specific regions, hazards, and communities. The effort will include support staff that will be responsible for continuous communication and working to conduct regular meetings to measure progress, share strategies, and work toward formative improvement.
