Outeach
UTEP PREM undergraduate and graduates students provide outreach to 7th, 8th and 9th grade students at local schools. Each activity is led by a dedicated team of students and is designed to motivate young minds about energy topics from a Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering perspective. Activities currently offered:
- Hydrogen Car – Basic principles of converting energy from solar to electrical to mechanical or chemical with the use of a fuel cell car.
- States of Matter– How molecular interactions impact the states of matter through building models and observing demonstrations.
- Light the Way – The electromagnetic spectrum and the bending and breaking of light through the use of prisms.
- Electric Train – Electricity and magnetic fields through the use of batteries and copper wires.
Materials Science Ambassador
The Materials Science Ambassadors at both UTEP and UCSB utilizes undergraduate and graduate students to outreach to local K-12 schools in both El Paso and Santa Barbara areas. Activities to be led by the Ambassadors will include:
Materials Science Ambassadors serve as workshops leaders and facilitators, provide information about science and engineering, and support college |
ExciTES Summer Institute
The Excellence in Technology, Engineering & Science Summer Institute (simply known as ExciTES) encourages students from the El Paso region to use their knowledge, imagination, and creativity and apply it to traditional math and science problems. All the activities during a week’s session are structured into a team environment where participants engage in hands-on and thematic modules. Materials Science research is core to what sixth graders through high schoolers will experience when they attend any ExciTES session during the months of June and July.
