The Military Student Success Center (MSSC) at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is your designated starting point if you desire to pursue a college degree. UTEP boasts a stellar nationwide reputation and offers the lowest out-of-pocket tuition cost of any national research university. The MSSC and their dedicated staff (many of whom are veterans and students) are here to help personnel in any branch of the service to reach their educational goals.
The MSSC serves the military-affiliated community of El Paso, Fort Bliss and beyond as the epicenter for success at The University of Texas at El Paso. Through collaborative effort, the MSSC ensures student success by achieving academic, social and professional development from admissions to graduation.
The University of Texas at El Paso is taking measures to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and faculty during the COVID-19 outbreak. On Tuesday, March 24th, the City of El Paso issued a shelter-at-home ordinance to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. All COVID-19 updates can be found at www.utep.edu/coronavirus.
MSSC Operations through recent UTEP Coronavirus Update:
As of March 23, 2020 the Military Student Success Center (MSSC) has transitioned to working remotely due to the health and safety of our staff.
No physical office visit will be supported until further notice.
If you have any documents that need to be turned in for your education benefits, please scan or take a picture with your phone and email them to email@example.com.
Do you have questions regarding summer full-time status for post 9/11 benefits?
Rule of thumb with the VA has been:
OPTION 1: 3 Standard Credit Hours (SCH) in Summer Session 1 (June) AND 3 SCH in Summer Session 2 (July)
OPTION 2: TWO 8 week courses that last both months (6 SCH)
*Disclaimer: Summer online enrollment MHA is still under review by VA.

You will receive a return email from a MSSC staff member in regards to your phone call.
Graduation Reception Spring 2020: Event will be postponed until further notice. If you are a graduating Veteran / Service Member, please stand by on guidance on collecting your military commencement cord at a future event/date.
Benefit Certification Updates:
Military Early Registration: Will continue as scheduled on March 23, 2020.
VA: Please email an updated Letter of Eligibility for any new or continuous enrollment.
- We do not anticipate any issues for those students already certified for Hazlewood benefits for Spring 2020 at this time. If you have not been processed, processing will continue and please contact us for any updates.
- If you are a continuously enrolled student, the requirement of providing a new Hazlewood Fall 2020 application will be waived unless this is your first term requesting Hazlewood ORyou have not attended in the last 2 semesters.
- First term requesting Hazlwood or haven’t used it in the last 2 semesters? Please email all required documents per information found at https://www.utep.edu/student-affairs/mssc/certification-process-link/hazlewood.html.
DoD Tuition Assistance:
We do not anticipate any issues for those service members utilizing Tuition Assistance. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the MSSC Fort Bliss Counselor, Darren Pursel, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
