The J-1 Student category is for individuals participating in academic programs at UTEP, including degree-seeking students, non-degree students, and exchange students. These programs are designed to support specific educational objectives and may include classroom instruction, research projects, or a combination of both.
This category is for individuals who have been admitted by the university to obtain a degree. Exchange Visitors in this category may extend their stay in the United States until they complete their degree objectives, provided they maintain valid J-1 status.
Exchange Visitors in the Degree-Seeking Student category may be subject to the Two-Year Home Country Physical Presence Requirement.
These students have been formally admitted by UTEP to pursue a degree program. Exchange Visitors in this category may remain in the United States until their degree requirements are completed, as long as they continue to maintain valid J-1 status.
The J-1 Student Non-Degree category is for individuals engaged in a prescribed academic program with a specific educational objective. Programs may include classroom instruction, research projects, or a combination of both.
Exchange students from partner institutions outside the United States typically attend UTEP for one semester or one academic year. These students participate in a prescribed non-degree academic program with a specific educational objective.
Their course of study may include classroom instruction, research projects, or both. Exchange Visitors in this category may participate for no more than 24 months.
For additional information, please contact the Study Abroad Office.
Only exchange, non-degree seeking students coming from the following partner institutions or through an exchange agreement with CONAHEC will follow this application process:

The application collects biographical information, educational background (such as the intended semester of study at UTEP and area of study), emergency contact information, and housing accommodation needs.
Students must submit documentation demonstrating they meet the minimum financial requirement to study at UTEP for the duration indicated on the Exchange Student Application (one or two semesters). Financial documents may not be more than six months old.
Financial statements or bank letters must include the name of the account holder, account type, account number, currency type, account balance, and date of issue. Documents must be translated into English. Funding must be liquid and immediately available for withdrawal.
