Elsie Slater, a self-taught biologist, is recognized as the first El Pasoan to build a collection of pressed plants of the region's flora, During her life, Elsie encouraged her community to appreciate and conserve natural history through her writings, art, and collecting trups with friends. After her death in 1952, Elsie's son donated her papers, paintings, and plant collections to various institutions at UTEP, including what would become the UTEP Biodiversity Collections. Elsie's collections form the oldest preserved plants to have been both collected and stored locally. Her work is impressive for its various artistic and scientific approaches. Elsie's distinct perspective on the Chihuahua Desert continues to inspires us to engage with the plants we pass by every day.
