Rethinking Engineering Education at Hispanic Serving Institutions
This NSF supported collaborative project aims to support future research and education on improving undergraduate engineering education at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).
The goal is to convene multiple interactive workshops with individuals not necessarily conducting engineering education research, but engaged in engineering education at both two- and four-year HSI's. During these workshops, participants are given a chance to test out three innovative approaches to supporting student learning, independent of specific pedagogies or tools: Design Thinking, Intrinsic Motivation, and students as Empowered Agents. Participants will actively design an activity for their course and reflect on mechanisms for amplifying these ideas on their campus. Upon successful completion of workshop activities, participants will receive a $250 stipend.
Review participant eligibility and to register. Lastly, a subset of the workshop attendees listed above, will participate in a follow-up workshop session at the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference and Exposition (ASEE 2018). These participants will have a unique opportunity to build relationships with engineering educators who are also engaged in engineering education reform. These selected participants will receive an additional $1,000 stipend
Workshops
An Interactive, Design-Focused Workshop
Join us for an interactive, design-focused workshop aimed at rethinking engineering education at HSIs. During the workshop, participants will be given a chance to test out three innovative approaches to support student learning independent of specific pedagogies or tools: Design Thinking, Intrinsic Motivation and students as Empowered Agents.
• Be introduced to three educational ideas that will help you examine your own beliefs about engineering education and its contexts.
• Explore opportunities and challenges related to applying these and other educational ideas at your institutions.
• Use these ideas to develop a prototype of an educational innovation that you can implement upon returning to your institution.
• Continue to reflect during the prototyping process on how we can support the future of engineering education at HSIs.
• Receive a $250 stipend for completion of all workshop activities and a chance to apply for a $1000 travel stipend for the ASEE Conference.
