Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering
Industrial engineering deals with the processes of improving, implementing and evaluating systems that include people, money, machines, information, energy, and materials. Industrial Engineers work to eliminate waste of money, time, energy, materials, and other resources. They also improve quality and reliability of products and processes. Getting and IE degree provides so much flexibility, you are NOT restricted to just some type of industries.
Industrial Engineers can perform a variety of tasks in different industries. But most importantly, they minimize costs throughout processes and organizations in general. This is the main reason why different businesses hire IEs. In 2012, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the mean salary for an Industrial Engineer was $78,860 per year. The top five highest paying metropolitan areas are: Bakersfield, CA; Houston, TX; Anchorage, AK; Midland, TX; and San Jose, CA.
Program Educational Objectives
The Industrial and Systems Engineering program produces diverse and exceptional graduates who within a few years after graduation will:
- Gain successful employment in a competitive global marketplace in leadership positions.
- Engage and be successful in graduate studies and/or professional training programs
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering (BSISE) program has seven student outcomes that we expect our students to achieve at the time of graduation. These student outcomes support the BSISE program educational objectives. Attainment of these outcomes prepares graduates to enter the professional practice of engineering. The student outcomes are:
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
- an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
Enrollment and Graduation Data
The ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science program in Industrial and Systems Engineering had a Fall 2017 enrollment of 313 students and produced 40 graduates during the 2016-17 academic year.
Fast Track Combined Bachelor's/Master's Programs
Students with at least 90 hours accumulated toward their degree, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30, and admission to any of our three graduate programs in Industrial, Manufacturing, or Systems Engineering can pursue a joint-degree BS-MS program.This Fast Track Combined Bachelor's/Master's Programs enables outstanding undergraduate UTEP students to receive dual undergraduate and graduate credit for up to 9 hours of UTEP graduate course work. UTEP Undergraduate Industrial Engineering students may use graduate classes to satisfy up to 9 standard credit hours (SCH) for the BS degree, primarily towards the requirements of the technical electives. This effectively reduces the total time to compete a M.S. in either Industrial, Manufacturing, or Systems Engineering by one semester. Students interested in this program should submit the application form by the end of their junior year.
Fast Track Combined BS/MBA
Students with at least 90 hours accumulated toward their degree, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30, and admission to the full-time MBA program can pursue a joint-degree BS-MBA program. Students admitted to this program (a) will apply credit for ECON 5360 Global Econ Environment-Mgrs, BLAW 5306 Business Law and Ethics, and ACCT 5301 Financial Accounting toward the requirements of three technical electives and (b) will apply credit for nine credit hours of graduate courses (approved for fast-track) in Industrial (IE), Manufacturing (MFG) or Systems (SE) Engineering toward the elective requirements of the MBA program. Students interested in this program should submit the application form by the end of their junior year.
Advising for all declared industrial engineering majors is provided through the faculty of the Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Department.
When the students require advice on course scheduling, course sequencing, course loads, course advice, administrative questions, career counseling, or any other problems, they must see their corresponding Undergraduate Advisor. During the registration periods, the student is free to register for classes restricted by course prerequisite(s) and course restrictions such as departmental approval or class level (junior/senior). The Industrial, Manufacturing & Systems Engineering Department has an open door policy with respect to advising. Therefore, in general students do not need appointments for advising; but it is recommended to come during their advisor's office hours.
Students are expected to follow the course sequence outlined in the IE Degree Plan Advising Flowchart. Students must adhere to all co- and pre-requisites and course restrictions outlined in the course descriptions contained in the university catalog, or obtain the proper waiver to take the course. The specific cases were co- and pre-requisites waivers have been issued are:
- For students that are taking or already took the prerequisite at El Paso Community College (EPCC) or other university and have their transfer pending. UTEP system cannot recognize those cases.
- For students trying to register upper level IE courses, where if we do not issue the prerequisite waiver will represent for the student to register an additional semester.
If a student needs a co- or pre-requisite waiver, he or she should consult his or her advisor to get the initial approval, then he or she needs to get the final approval from the Chair of the department offering the course. If not approved, the process terminates and the student is not allowed to register for the course.
- Senior Project (IE 4466) can only be taken during the semester when the student is graduating and the student must have a Major and Overall GPA greater than or equal to 2.0 to register for the course. An exception to this policy could be approved for a student during the spring registration. The student must complete his or her degree plan requirements during the summer term.
- All students who are on academic probation are required to speak with his or her lead advisor before registering for the semester. The student must fill a Petition for reinstatement, which must be approved by the Undergraduate Advisor, the Department Chair, and the Dean of the College of Engineering.
