At UTEP, students are not only pursuing their academic dreams but also breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations. Alexa Hildary Gonzalez, a Biological Sciences major specializing in Biomedicine, demonstrates perseverance, ambition, and the impact of scholarships throughout her journey.
“I chose UTEP because it represents hope and opportunity for students like me—first-generation, Latina, and determined to create a better future,” she shares. “UTEP is more than just a university; it is a community that embraces its students, uplifts them, and empowers them to chase dreams that once felt out of reach.”
For Alexa, UTEP has provided a supportive environment that understands the challenges faced by underrepresented students and has made all the difference in her academic and personal growth.
Alexa’s Passion for Medicine
Alexa’s journey into the medical field is deeply personal. As a child, she witnessed her mother’s struggles as an immigrant from Costa Rica to Mexico, facing financial hardships that made healthcare inaccessible. Seeing firsthand the impact of medical professionals, Alexa knew she wanted to become a doctor—not just to treat patients, but to provide dignity and compassion.
“My journey has taught me that healthcare is not just about medicine; it is about humanity,” she says. “I am determined to dedicate my life to serving those who need it most.”
Impact of Scholarships
As the recipient of the Houston Endowment Scholarship, the Study Abroad Scholarship, and the IME Beca, Alexa has experienced how financial support can change a student’s college path.
“My scholarships have been my lifeline,” she says. “Before receiving them, I had to work two jobs while keeping up with rigorous coursework. Now, I can dedicate myself fully to my studies, community service, and leadership without the fear of financial barriers holding me back.”
Alexa’s scholarships have allowed her to focus on excelling academically while also making meaningful contributions to the UTEP community and beyond.
Extracurriculars and Study Abroad Experience
Alexa has taken and embraced every opportunity to grow as a leader. She started as a member of the Student Impact Association and quickly rose to Director of Communications. She then became Science Collegiate Senator in the Student Government Association (SGA), where she launched a project providing 75 free MCAT practice exams to support aspiring doctors. Alexa later became Vice President for External Affairs in SGA, representing over 24,000 students at the University of Texas System Student Advisory Council.
Aside from her involvement at the University, she has expanded her global perspective through a year-long exchange program at the University of Ulsan in South Korea. In February 2025, she traveled to Thailand to teach English to children from low-income communities. “Seeing the spark of hope in their eyes reminded me why I do what I do,” she reflects. “Education, like healthcare, is a right, not a privilege.”
Alexa’s Vision for the Future
Alexa’s ultimate goal is to become a gynecologist dedicated to ensuring that every woman has access to quality healthcare. She envisions launching social campaigns to educate and empower women about reproductive health, breaking the cycle of misinformation and stigma.
“My journey is not just about becoming a doctor; it is about becoming a voice for those who have none,” she states passionately.
The Power of Giving Back
Alexa is deeply grateful for the donors and alumni who have supported scholarships at UTEP. She believes their generosity is not just an investment in education but in the future of countless students.
“When alumni and donors invest in scholarships, they are giving students the chance to break cycles of poverty, become leaders, and change the world,” she says. “Your kindness has given me the chance to pursue my passion, and one day, I will pay it forward to ensure another student has the same opportunity to rise.”
Alexa’s story serves as a reminder of how scholarships can open doors, change lives, and empower future generations to continue following their dreams.
