Phishing Attacks On The Rise!
For the past few months, UTEP has been a target for a variety of phishing attacks. Users have been receiving phony emails stating that the Information Technology (IT) department is "updating the email system" and that if they want "to keep your email account active" they need to respond to the email by sending their username and password to them. As with all phishing scams, a few people respond and give out their credentials. The hackers then use these credentials to access the email accounts and then use them to send out large quantities of spam.
As a reminder, UTEP will NEVER ask you for your password. Please do not share your password with anyone.
We are always on the look out for new variants of these phishing attempts, and do our best to filter out as many as possible. If you do receive one, please forward it to The Information Security Office so that we can add it to our IronPort spam filter.
