Craig Field, PhD, MPH

Director

Craig Field received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and a Master’s degree in Community Health from the UT Houston School of Public Health.  Dr. Field is a licensed psychologist in the State of Texas with extensive training in the use of Motivational Interviewing and its application to Brief Motivational Interventions in academic, judicial and health care settings.  He is Associate Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso and teaches Motivation and Emotion, Health Psychology and Health Behavior Interventions.  He serves as area head for the Clinical Master’s degree in Psychology.  

Dr. Field’s primary research interest are addressing alcohol-related health disparities and treatment inequities among Hispanics. Dr. Field’s research has been funded by the National Institutes on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute on Drug Abuse and Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute.  He has authored or co-authored more than 50 publications addressing the effectiveness of brief interventions and their contribution to reduce alcohol-related health inequities among Hispanics. As a result of his commitment to alcohol-related health disparities, he has been recognized as a Health Disparities Scholar by the NIMHD as a National Health Disparities Scholar. 

In addition to research, Dr. Field has been a part of national efforts funded by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to disseminate this evidenced-based approach to reducing alcohol problems among injured patients.  Since that time, Dr. Field, Paty Juarez, LAHDR's Training Director, and Reyna Puentes, LAHDR's Training Coordinator, were funded by the Paso del Norte Health Foundation for four years to disseminate Screening and Brief Motivational Intervention in criminal justice, academic and health care settings throughout the El Paso community. 

 Teaching & Service

As Associate Professor at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Dr. Field serves the department as part of the Awards Committee and is the representative for Health Psychology Ph.D. program on the Graduate Program Committee.  He is also the head of the Clinical Master’s degree program and teaches Psychotherapy at the graduate level.  At the undergraduate level, he teaches Motivation and Emotion and Health Psychology.
