Portuguese at UTEP
Portuguese is one of the languages offered by the Department of Chicano Studies, Languages, and Linguistics. Portuguese courses may be taken towards the completion of a Brazilian Studies Certificate, to satisfy the Liberal Arts foreign language requirement, or to enhance one’s program of study as an elective.
Portuguese Courses
PORT 1301 - Portuguese One. An introductory Portuguese course with emphasis on pronunciation and the basic elements of grammar; practice in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing.
PORT 1302 - Portuguese Two. Continuation of PORT 1301, with the introduction of more complex elements of grammar; additional practice in the four basic skills.
PORT 2301 - Portuguese Three. A course emphasizing development of conversational and reading skills in Portuguese. Review and continuation of grammar study begun in PORT 1301 and PORT 1302. Readings from Brazilian and Portuguese writers.
PORT 2302 - Portuguese Four. Continuation of PORT 2301, with some grammar review and more extensive readings from Brazilian and Portuguese writers.
PORT 3340 - Cultures of Brazil. This course uses a mixture of literature, essays, songs, and films to introduce students to key aspects of Brazilian history, culture and society. As a discussion-based seminar course, students will explore and debate how key figures and key moments have reflected and shaped the identity of Brazil and its people. Students will also find opportunities to compare and contrast aspects of Brazilian culture with other countries in the Americas.
