What is Museum Studies?
Have you ever wondered how museums decide what things to collect, or what makes something a museum, or even why we have museums in the first place? Museum Studies helps answer these questions and more. It also helps prepare students for a career in museums (and there are many of these).
Museums in the 21st century have taken on new and exciting roles within their communities. They are reaching a broader and more diverse audience using innovative tools and programs. Museums come in a wide variety of types and sizes, from smaller local institutions focused on engaging audiences in their region, to national giants such as the Smithsonian (http://www.si.edu) and those with an international scope, such as the Metropolitan Museum (http://www.metmuseum.org) or the Louvre (https://www.louvre.fr/en). Museum Studies engages with issues that affect all types of museums, and the classes explore examples from museums all over the world.
