Master of Music (M.M.) Degree
The Department of Music offers the Master of Music (M.M.) degree with concentrations in Performance, Conducting, Education, Theory, and Composition.
- With degree plans requiring 30-32 credit hours, full-time students typically complete the degree in 4 semesters.
- Public school teachers can complete an M.M. degree with a concentration in Conducting in 4 semesters and 2 summer sessions while maintaining their professional positions during the academic year.
- The M.M. in Conducting can be completed either on site or by taking 18 of the 30 required credits online. For details on the distance-learning option, please see the information on the Extended University website (Master of Music with a Concentration in Conducting).
- Except for MUSA 5341 and MUSG 5349, all courses for the distance-learning option are asynchronous. Thus, the only technology that is required for these courses is reliable internet access. Once admitted to the program, students will be provided with credentials to access course materials on the university’s Blackboard portal.
- For MUSA 5341 and MUSG 5349, in addition to reliable internet access, students will need a webcam and access to a video conferencing platform. Blackboard Collaborate is available through UTEP’s technology resources. The student and instructor may choose to use another platform (e.g., Zoom, Skype, Facetime, etc.) that is most convenient.
- Technical support is available to all students via phone, chat, and email at UTEP Technology Support.
Requirements for Admission to the M.M. Degree Program
1. A Bachelor of Music degree or equivalent.
2. Evidence of satisfactory undergraduate preparation in music.
3. An interview and submission of materials related to the applicant’s field of specialization. These include an audition (on-campus or video recording) for those specializing in Performance or Conducting, and samples of scholarly or creative work for those specializing in Education, Theory, or Composition. Applicants in Education are also required to have public school certification or equivalent professional teaching experience. During the interview, applicants for the distance-learning option in Conducting will be apprised of the necessary technological requirements for online courses and will need to confirm their ability to access and navigate such technology.
• Teaching Assistantships are available to qualified students. A Teaching Assistantship position involves working 20 hours per week assisting the department in teaching and administrative needs. Teaching Assistants receive a stipend, reduction of tuition to in-state rates, and benefits available to half-time employees.
