Dean Welcomes College of Liberal Arts Community to Exciting Spring Events
Welcome to our newsletter! We've had a productive and engaging spring semester, and we're excited to highlight recent updates in the college since last fall.
Events on the horizon
We hope to see you at exciting upcoming events, including at the dynamic exhibits at the Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. We’re looking forward to the Annual Juried UTEP Student Art Exhibition, which launches with an opening reception on May 10. We welcome you to view the artwork by undergraduate art students, which will be on display through July 11.
We also have exciting performances planned in the coming months. The Department of Theatre and Dance will host the UTEP Dance Festival 2024, titled "Person(Hood)," which will be led by artistic director Tawanda Chabikwa and will feature an exhibit at the Rubin Center, as well as a collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua. The festival runs through April 28. The UTEP Dinner Theatre will also bring their production of Legally Blonde to the stage starting April 19.
In the Department of Music, we have many exciting spring performances, including Opera UTEP’s production of “Femme Fatales” on April 26-27, where they will be joined by the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, the award-winning UTEP Dance Team, and will include a pre-show discussion from Women and Gender Studies’ Hilda Ontiveros, Ph.D. The show will be directed by Cherry Duke, our longtime director of Opera UTEP and one of the recipients of the University of Texas System Regents Outstanding Teaching Awards.
Farewell to a valued colleague
Looking back, many in the College of Liberal Arts family recently gathered to celebrate the retirement of our longtime colleague, Yvonne Carranza Rolph. It’s difficult to sum up everything she did for more than two decades, but Yvonne was a mainstay at the University, playing a key role in making sure that the students, faculty and staff had the best possible experience during their time at UTEP. This proud alumna was a key part of the academic journey for countless students, working recruitment and retention services, organizing pre-commencement ceremonies, and even reading out names at Commencement. There’s no question she made an impact in our college and beyond.
She put her heart into her work here at UTEP, and the college is grateful for her years of service. ¡Gracias, Yvonne!
Raise Your Pick Giving Day
Moving forward, we will continue to encourage the spirit of giving back and paying it forward at the annual Raise Your Pick Giving Day on April 16-17. At this annual event, our community is encouraged to give to a cause that is important to them. We invite you to learn about various causes related to the college, including the Centennial Museum, Fine and Performing Arts, KTEP, the Law School Preparation Institute, and the Liberal Arts Student Travel Fund.
I hope to see you at the campuswide Raise Your Pick Giving Day celebration on April 16 at Centennial Plaza!
