Meet Our Fall 2024 MA Students
Jeralyn Barbie
First-year graduate student in Sociology at the University of Texas at El Paso
Jeralyn Barbie graduated from UTEP in May 2024 with a bachelor's degree in Anthropology with a minor in History and the Liberal Arts Honors Program as cuma sum laude. She is a former President of the Anthropology Association and has been active within the club since 2022.
Active within the Center for Accommodations and Support Services (CASS), which assists students with disabilities as a notetaker, providing notes and readings for CASS. She won the Outstanding Community Engagement award in 2023 for logging over three hundred hours of community service for CASS.
Jeralyn Barbie is the mother of three children and is the first person in her family to attend graduate school. She was awarded the Stars Scholarship three times and the Tom Lea III fellowship, continuing her work in research for the Tom Lea Institute.
Jeralyn Barbie has had her fair share of "life" lessons and continues to live by this motto: "Problems come, issues get resolved, but a degree remains with you." Keep reaching and striving; keep focus, and the reward will be grand.

Yamaris Cordero
Yamaris Cordero is a Graduate Students and Research Assistant in the Master's program in Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Texas at El Paso with a keen interest in Medical Sociology, she seeks to explore analyzing the factors contributing to pharmaceutical and medical preferences among residents of the Texas-Mexico Border as well as the disparities within the health care system more so tied to the pharmaceutical industry.
Yamaris holds a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Biological Sciences and a Minor in Sociology from the University of Texas at El Paso, where she conducted research on Medicalization of a variety of medical illnesses. She has a strong background in medicine and health care issues, which she applies in her current research.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Yamaris is actively involved in community health initiatives. She is passionate about health care, aiming to contribute positively to her community and the field at large.
Outside of academia, Yamaris enjoys traveling, physical fitness, and cinematography, which enriches her understanding of diverse cultures and social dynamics.
