Technology Updates for the College of Liberal Arts for March 25th
There was an intrusion event on the UTEP network on March 5th, 2021. The event caused a university-wide network outage that greatly disrupted technology usage, not only at the College of Liberal Arts, but at the whole university. Below are several questions and answers addressing the current status of technology at the college. If there are any subjects not addressed here, please contact Liberal Arts TIM Andy Castellanos at acastellanos@utep.edu
Frequently Asked Questions about technology use
1. I need to connect my UTEP computer to the UTEP network. Do I need the Carbon Black software installed on my computer?
Yes. You must have the required Carbon Black software installed on your computer if you want to connect to the UTEP network.
For additional FAQs concerning the required Carbon Black software, please visit this link: https://www.utep.edu/information-resources/iso/resources/required-computer-software.html
2. I placed a call with the UTEP Helpdesk to have Carbon Black installed on my computer but they haven't gotten back to me. What do I do?
If you have already submitted a request to Carbon Black remotely installed, please wait for the UTEP Helpdesk to install it for you the UTEP Helpdesk will cancel the request. If you need to connect your computer to the UTEP network in the immediate future, the LACIT Computer Lab in LART 405 can install it for you. Please contact Andy Castellanos at acastellanos@utep.edu to set up an appointment.
3. My computer is in my campus office. Do I have the Carbon Black software already installed?
Technology personnel from UTEP has already installed the Carbon Black software on most of the computers on campus. If you would like us to check your computer, please contact the Liberal Arts TIM Andy Castellanos at acastellanos@utep.edu to set up an appointment.
4. I returned to my campus office and my computer has a yellow sticker with the word SCANNED. Is it safe to use?
The yellow sticker means that a Liberal Arts tech worked on your computer. The sticker will have your computer's tag number, the initials of the tech and the date when the Carbon Black software was installed. If your computer has this sticker and is behaving normally, it is safe to continue using your computer.
5. My office computer doesn't have a yellow sticker. Is it safe to use?
The lack of a yellow sticker means that another entity (not Liberal Arts) was responsible for installing the Carbon Black software on your computer. The software may or may not be installed on your computer. If you would like for us to check, please contact Liberal Arts TIM Andy Castellanos at acastellanos@utep.edu to set up an appointment.
6. I need to access my network shared drives on my department's file server. Can I access them now?
Yes, provided that you have the Carbon Black software installed on your computer. If you don't have the software installed on your computer, DO NOT CONNECT TO YOUR NETWORK SHARED DRIVES as you may infect them with ransomware.
7. Do I need the Carbon Black software installed on my campus office computer in order to access my network shared drives?
Yes. The Carbon Black software is required to be installed on your campus computer, especially if you connect to network shared drives.
8. Can I connect to my network shared drives using my personal computer?
No, you are not allowed to connect to your network shared drives from a personal computer anymore. Only UTEP computers with the Carbon Black software installed are allowed to connect to network shared drives. The Carbon Black software cannot be installed on personal computers.
If you choose to disobey this directive of not accessing network shared drives from a personal computer, you are risking the integrity of your data!
9. My computer is being blocked from the internet and/or is infected with ransomware. What do I do?
Contact Liberal Arts TIM Andy Castellanos immediately at acastellanos@utep.edu to start the remediation process.
10. I have an issue unrelated to the network outage. Can you work on my computer?
