Dr. Lowry Martin

Dr. Lowry Martin is an Associate Professor of French at UTEP whose interdisciplinary research and teaching encompass Women’s and Gender Studies, queer and sexuality studies, border studies, film and visual culture, and transnational cultural studies. His work examines intersections of gender, sexuality, race, space, migration, and national identity in French and Francophone literature, film, and graphic novels, with particular interests in France’s cultural intersections with the Caribbean, Israel and the Middle East, the Maghreb, and the Americas. His current projects include Sapphic Mosaics, a study of female same-sex desire and the regulation of intimacy in modern France, and research on Israeli, Middle Eastern, and Maghrebi cinema and cultural production as they intersect with France. Across his scholarship and teaching, he is especially interested in how gender and sexuality illuminate questions of borders, displacement, cultural exchange, and belonging.
