We are training the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers and academicians. We provide pedagogical and research experiences that teach advanced skills in research design, methods, statistics, grant writing, and writing for publication, while providing models for the conceptualization and development of interdisciplinary research programs in health and disease prevention.
We are located on the U.S.-Mexico border. Our doctoral students are uniquely positioned to become national leaders in interdisciplinary health research, addressing through scholarly research major health and health disparity issues. While providing invaluable access to large Hispanic and Mexican-American populations, we teach models that are applicable for interdisciplinary research among a broad range of populations. We build confidence in our students through high demands for excellence in scholarship. After completing our program, our students are fully prepared to succeed in academic and research careers of their choosing, and typically become higher education faculty in the “high demand” areas of public health, rehabilitation sciences, and health professions education.
The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences program includes faculty from the fields of Public Health Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Nursing, Social Work, Kinesiology, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling, Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Language Pathology. Our faculty conduct research in health and health disparities, with programs investigating diabetes, obesity, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, child welfare, maternal health, women’s health and aging, exercise, nutrition and diet, end of life care, stress and mental health, family violence, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury and health behavior change. Areas of faculty expertise include biostatistics, computer modeling, advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods, multi-level modeling, epidemiology, and bioethics.
Interdisciplinary research poses many special challenges. To ensure that students receive individualized attention and high quality mentorship, we maintain low student to faculty ratios throughout the program. And when relevant, we ensure that our students have ready access to faculty in other colleges from fields such as Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Philosophy, Education, Computer Sciences, Engineering and Religious Studies. Importantly, our students have access to the library system of the University of Texas, which includes a vast electronic book and journal collection, and state-of-the-art computing facilities. The program is housed in the recently completed $60 million, 138,000 sq. ft. Health Sciences and Nursing building on the main campus that houses state-of-the-art clinical and research laboratories, innovative teaching and clinical simulation spaces, and faculty and administrative offices.
Financial support is available through a variety of sources including financial aid, loans, fellowships and scholarships. Assistantships exist for teaching and research, giving students the opportunity to assist with courses, or assist faculty members in research.
If your goal is to become a highly productive researcher in the rapidly emerging field of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, you should carefully consider the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Ph.D. Program at the University of Texas, El Paso, College of Health Sciences and College of Nursing.
A rigorous and stimulating Interdisciplinary Health Sciences doctoral training experience awaits. Apply now!
