Researchers within UTEP’s College of Education conduct research impacting students at every grade level, from Pre-K to doctoral level. With an eye for diversity and supporting Spanish-speaking students, your work can have a direct impact on the community UTEP serves. Specializations within the college also include higher education, educational policy, administration, and mental health counseling.
From biomedical engineering and additive manufacturing to advancing the field of aerospace and defense engineering, faculty at UTEP’s College of Engineering make waves globally with their research. The College of Health Sciences brings together interdisciplinary researchers working to advance discovery across the broad spectrum of health, including physical therapy, social work, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and more. Research within this college has encompassed everything from student well-being to supporting the health of immigrants, veterans, and addressing disparities in Hispanic communities. The College of Health Sciences is home to more than 20 labs and centers advancing research in communication, physiology, experimental food, health disparities, and more.
The largest college at UTEP, the College of Liberal Arts houses UTEP’s communications, English, fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, and art programs and researchers. Housed within the College of Liberal Arts are research centers dedicated to studying border security, the intersections of law and psychology, borderlands history, minority alcohol consumption, and beyond.
Researchers within UTEP’s College of Nursing combine their clinical and research expertise to execute research projects advancing nursing and healthcare in the region and beyond. Partnering with researchers from other colleges and centers, including the Border Biomedical Research Center, faculty in this college make a direct impact on the community they serve.
The College of Science offers a wide array of research areas to UTEP faculty, from math, teaching, and data science to biomedical research. Home to the Border Biomedical Research Center, UTEP researchers often work with hypotheses and projects that analyze the health disparities of the region.
Researchers at UTEP’s School of Pharmacy make inroads in pharmaceutical and health research, including dementia, pancreatic cancer, and more. UTEP’s School of Pharmacy is the only accredited pharmacy school on the border and places an emphasis on supporting Hispanic health disparities.
In 2024, UTEP received a matching grant of $4.5 million from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation – the region’s premier nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the health needs of El Paso; Cd. Juarez, Mexico; and Southern New Mexico – to enhance UTEP Health, a collaborative effort bringing together UTEP’s Colleges of Health Sciences and Nursing, School of Pharmacy, Mental Health Counseling program within the College of Education, and Psychology Department within the College of Liberal Arts to support health professionals and researchers from the region who are dedicated to serving the region.
UTEP’s Center for Community Engagement connects UTEP students with community and civic engagement opportunities in El Paso and beyond, and they also provide opportunities for research collaborations to faculty at UTEP. Faculty members may also elect to make their classes “community engagement courses,” which come with service hours and a special designation on your students’ transcripts. UTEP has also received distinction in community engagement from the Carnegie Foundation, which is given for strides in scholarly partnerships with local and national organizations.
Located on the border, UTEP possesses strong ties with researchers in Mexico, opening the door for collaboration between UTEP faculty and researchers from across Mexico. Recently, UTEP awarded fellowships to six researchers to boost collaboration between researchers from both countries at the benefit of the Paso del Norte region.
