Animal Subjects Training

Animal Care and Use training is required for all Principal Investigators (PIs), co-investigators, designated editors, and other research personnel involved in the use of live vertebrate animals. Research personnel must complete all required online training modules relevant to their duties, including species-specific procedures, animal handling, occupational health and safety, and regulatory compliance, prior to protocol or  amendment approval.    

Online Modules:

Working with the IACUC CITI Training (all researchers, due every three years)

Mice CITI Training (researchers only working with mice, due every three years)

Rats CITI Training (researchers only working with rats, due every three years)

Mice and Rats CITI Training (researchers working with both mice and rats, due every  three years)

Lab Chemical Safety CITI Training (all researchers, due every three years)

Animal Researcher CITI Training (researchers working with biological agents or human  samples, due every year)

Occupational Health and Safety (OHP)

To better comply with federal requirements, UTEP collaborates with the Texas Tech  University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) in El Paso to have TTUHSC medical  personnel review and evaluate OHP questionnaires. Please follow the link to start the  process and complete the survey.

After completing the survey, you will receive a Qualtrics survey email from Texas Tech  Occupational Health. This email will notify you that you will receive an online form to  complete through DocuSign within two business days. Subsequent communications  may be sent from: OccupationalHealthElp@ttep.edu and/or YGrady@ttep.edu . Please
complete all questions on the DocuSign form. If your research involves biological or  chemical agents, please list those agents in the notes section. Please note that any  vaccines offered as part of this process are voluntary and may be declined.

Once submitted, a TTUHSC nurse or other qualified medical professional will review  your questionnaire. If no health concerns are identified, you will be enrolled in the OHP,  and no further action will be required. If a health concern is identified (e.g., chronic  allergies, pregnancy, immunocompromised condition, or other medical considerations),  you may be asked to provide vaccination records or participate in a follow-up evaluation  with a TTUHSC nurse.

Hands on training

Hands on training consists of Vivarium Orientation , which is a five-hour class that covers the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), vivarium access privileges, facility functions, and a tour of the vivarium. Make sure you have completed the online training requirements and have been cleared by the TTUHSC occupational health program prior to signing up for Vivarium Orientation through MineTracker .

Facility Access

Once you have completed all the above training requirements and are approved on an active IACUC protocol, you will need to submit an access request through the facilities service desk. For this request, please provide all lab/vivarium space you will need access to.
