The first point of contact for any research related CUI questions or support is the Research Protections Office. Contact rso@utep.edu for guidance or questions regarding the safeguarding of CUI.
When a solicitation, contract, or agreement includes CUI clauses, confirm with the originating federal agency or flow down the need to receive, store, and/or process CUI. Use this Quick Reference Guide for Identifying FCI and CUI as a guide to identifying CUI clauses.
Report the need to work with CUI to your RA or the UTEP Office for Research Protections (rso@utep.edu). The Research Security Officer (RSO) will work with the PI to conduct a CUI review. Upon confirmation of CUI, the RSO will inform the Information Security Office (ISO) and the PI will work with ISO to set up the controlled environment. The PI will be required to complete an ISO CUI Questionnaire.
Everyone involved in the project who will require access to CUI will receive a notice from security@utep.edu to take required CUI training. Links to the training modules and instructions for submitting your certificates will be included.
ISO will then help implement the controlled environment that will meet the project needs. Options include:
CUI Laptop
CUI Café (an internal CUI enclave developed by ISO and Information Resources)
AWS GovCloud
Work with the RSO, ISO, and the CUI originator to negotiate how to properly receive CUI on the controlled environment. Options include:
DoD Safe
PreVeil
Other ISO and Agency/Flow Down approved method
If a controlled environment is needed to discuss or share CUI documents with others, request a Zoom – GovCloud account through HelpDesk@utep.edu. Note: Consult with ISO if the CUI originator supports an alternate method.
If you need to share CUI documents with anyone at the University, request a Preveil account from security@utep.edu. Preveil provides a secure email platform for sharing documents as attachments.
