Restricted Research

When working on a research proposal or accepting a new award from a federal agency, it is important to understand the distinction between Fundamental Research and Restricted Research. Restricted research (such as classified, controlled unclassified, or export controlled) involves greater administrative oversight as well as more stringent security controls.

Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) is information that requires safeguarding or dissemination controls pursuant to and consistent with applicable law, regulations, and government-wide policies but is not classified under Executive Order 13526 or the Atomic Energy Act, as amended.
