Undergraduate Program
Our department has a history of successfully preparing students for graduate studies, for a teaching career, as well as for positions in industry.
The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree, with possible concentration in
- Actuarial Sciences
- Applied Mathematics
- Secondary Education Certification
- Statistics
Minors in Mathematics and Data Science
The department also offers minors in Mathematics and Data Science.
A minor in mathematics requires MATH 1411, MATH 1312, and an additional minimum of 4 courses, at least 2 of which must be upper-division approved courses: MATH 2300, MATH 2325, MATH 2313, MATH 2320, MATH 2326, MATH 3319, MATH 3320, MATH 3323 or MATH 4326, MATH 3325, MATH 3327, MATH 3328, MATH 3329, MATH 3335, MATH 3341, MATH 4325, MATH 4329, MATH 4336, MATH 4341, STAT 3330, STAT 3381, and STAT 4380.
A minor in Data Science requires 18 hours (six advanced) as follows: CS 1420 or equivalent, MATH 2301 or 1411, plus 12 hours from approved courses, 6 of which must be from upper division courses: MATH 4370, STAT 2480, STAT 3330, STAT 4380, STAT 4385
Students who plan to pursue graduate studies in Statistics-related areas are urged to take STAT 4380.

Admission
In very general terms, these are the steps to become a Math major at UTEP. Interested applicants will find more and the most updated information at UTEP's Office Admissions and Recruitment web page.
- Applying for admission:
All students interested in attending UTEP should fill out the online application at ApplyTexas.org. There is more information on the Program Admissions page for incoming, transfer and international students.
Applicants' transcripts and SAT scores should be sent to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment.
- Applying for scholarships and/or financial aid:
All scholarships are processed through the Office of Scholarships.
The Office of Financial Aid can help applicants find a grant, loan or workstudy to help them achieve their educational goals. The financial aid process will start after an applicant submits the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Attending new student orientation:
Once applicants are admitted, they should sign up and attend a New Student Orientation (NSO) session. The New Student Orientation web page gives the latest information.
- Register for classes:
Online registration via Goldmine. The registration process will be covered during the new student orientation session.
