Next Steps in Your Fellowships Journey

Are you an undergraduate looking for...

Awards for experiential learning overseas?

Awards for 1-2 years of undergrad education?

Awards for graduate school tuition?

Then an external scholarship or fellowship may be for you! External scholarships and fellowships are prestigious and nationally competitive merit-based funding opportunities. Typically, you apply for these awards a year in advance, so it’s important to start planning early, and the UTEP Office of Student Fellowships and Awards (OSFA) can help!

If you are seeking information on need-based financial aid (i.e. grants and loans that require submission of a FAFSA), please visit the Financial Aid Office.

Graduate students interested in awards other than the Fulbright Student Program and the NSF GRFP, which are managed by the UTEP OSFA, please click here.

STEP 1: FIND YOUR FIT

Think about what kind of funding you want
Apply as...

   To pay for...

Junior
  • Overseas experiential learning opportunities prior to graduation (such as study abroad programs, mentored research, foreign language study, etc.)
  • Funding for graduate study
Senior
  • Overseas experiential learning following graduation
  • Funding for graduate study

Think about  "FIT" as you review opportunities. Does the award fit your needs? Do you fit the mission of the award?

Think about:

  • Does the funder support the work I do?
  • Am I eligible in terms of citizenship, discipline, career stage, etc.?
  • Can I complete the application requirements by the deadline?
  • Will the funding cover what I need, when I need it?

STEP 2: BROWSE OUR LIST

Review the list of Award Competitions We Manage, which are all national competitions and external to UTEP.

STEP 3: FIND OTHER OPTIONS

Not finding the right award for you on our list? Check out these databases with easy search features, including career stage and citizenship.
International students will find these especially helpful!

Note that although these databases are maintained by entities outside UTEP, they feature nationally competitive opportunities and may be used by anyone!

STEP 4: MAKE YOUR SHORT LIST

Make your short list of awards that are of interest to you so you can keep track of deadlines and identify which information sessions you should attend.

STEP 5: APPLY!

Now that you have a plan, you should enact it!

If you plan to pursue any awards that have an on-campus nomination or selection process with an earlier campus deadline.

If interested in the Fulbright Student Program or NSF GRFP, please note that the UTEP OSFA offers summer “boot camp” advising programs that will walk you through the process of crafting the strongest application possible!
