The Terry Foundation Scholarship covers the full cost of attendance at UTEP including tuition, fees, on-campus housing, and a study abroad opportunity for incoming freshmen in fall 2023. We are looking for the next cohort of Terry Scholars at UTEP and YOU could be the one selected for this life-changing experience.

How to apply

  1. Complete the Online Scholarship Interest Form
    1. This form takes about 5 minutes to complete and adds you to our communication list to receive updates. 
  2. Make sure to apply for admission to UTEP 
    1. For specific admissions information please visit the Office of Admissions website.
    2. Please note that only students who are fully admitted by the application deadline will have their applications considered. 
  3. Complete the Online Terry Scholarship Application for Incoming Freshmen
    1. To login to the site, please click the yellow button that says "Login with your school account"
      1. You will need your UTEP credentials (username and password) in order to access the online application system. 
    2. Need to setup your UTEP Username and Password? 
      1. Once you have been admitted to UTEP and have your UTEP ID # (it starts with an 8) then you can activate your UTEP Account. 
      2. Click here to activate your UTEP account and receive your username and password. 
      3. For help with your UTEP credentials, please contact the UTEP Helpdesk at 915-747-4357 or e-mail helpdesk@utep.edu. 
    3. After you access the scholarship application via utep.edu/terryapplication, you will see a series of sections on the left side 
      1. You must answer all the required questions on the application in order for the "Submit Application" button to appear that will allow you to submit your application. 
      2. If you are having trouble getting the "Submit Application" button to appear, try clicking on your dashboard and then click back into the scholarship application.  
  4. Receive a confirmation e-mail
    1. After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from terryscholars@utep.edu within one week of applying. 

Incoming Freshmen - Requirements

  • Academic Achievement: Demonstrate strong academic abilities, as evidenced by grades and SAT/ACT scores.
  • GPA: Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or an 85 on a 100 point scale to be considered.
  • Leadership: Demonstrate a high level of leadership and community service in school and in the community
  • Financial Need: Demonstrate financial need. All applicants will be required to complete and submit the FAFSA.
  • Citizenship and Residency:
    • U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident
    • Meet Texas residency requirements
  • High School Graduate: Must be a graduate from an accredited Texas high school or homeschool.
  • Full-time College Admission: Be admitted to The University of Texas at El Paso and plan attend the University as a full-time, entering freshman
  • On-campus Housing: Applicants must apply and commit to residing on campus for the first full academic year as a Terry Scholar.
  • Student Organization: Membership and participation in the Terry Scholars at UTEP student organization.

  4. Short Answer Questions (250 word max)
    1. To gain a better understanding of any financial need, please describe any special circumstances that affect your family’s ability to fund your college expense. (This helps the committee determine your financial need for a scholarship).
    2. Why have you chosen to apply to UTEP?
    3. Why have you chosen your academic major(s)?
  5. Essay Questions (500 word max)
    1. Tell us your story. What unique opportunities or challenges have you experienced throughout your high school career that have shaped who you are today?
    2. Describe a specific situation in which you demonstrated leadership in your school or community.Describe your actions and explain what was accomplished.
  6. Letters of recommendation - 2 letters are required 
    1. The student will submit contact information for the recommenders directly in the online application portal
      1. The recommenders will receive an e-mail with a direct link to upload the PDF letter

What happens after I apply? 

  1. Applicants will receive a confirmation e-mail message from terryscholars@utep.edu confirming receipt of the application. 
  2. After initial review, applicants will be notified that their application is complete and will continue to be reviewed by a Scholarship Review Committee. 
  3. Following review of all completed applications received, UTEP will interview a select number of students. 
  4. A final list of nominees will be selected for final scholarship interviews by Terry Foundation representatives. 
  5. The Terry Foundation will award a select number of recipients for the Terry Scholar Traditional Scholarship. 

*Please note that UTEP serves as a nominating body only. All final decisions regarding scholarship awards are made by the Terry Foundation.
