Border West Expressway

Border West Expressway

TxDoT has three highways, US 85/Paisano Drive, Loop 375, and I-10, all of which are located within the 1,000 feet that divide the Rio Grande River and Sunbowl Drive. Why so many highways? As El Paso has grown over the past several decades, I-10 has become increasingly congested. By connecting Loop 375 to the Border West Expressway in 2007, TxDoT has relieved traffic, improved connectivity, and increased access to UTEP, downtown, and the medical center. The $640 million project included contributions from Daniel Carrera, a senior partner at Houston-based Walter P. Moore and a 2021 UTEP Masters' graduate.  In June, the Texas Society of Professional Engineers named Carrera the 2022 Texas Young Engineer of the Year.

Carretera Fronteriza Oeste

CE: What projects in the El Paso area have your worked on?

RP: I've worked with TxDOT for 20 years, so I've worked on just about every keystone project, including the Border West Expressway, C-D lanes, I-10 connect, and 4601, our first design-build project. We worked on constructing Cesar Chavez as a toll lane, the first toll lane in El Paso. It's fulfilling to see all the projects that get built knowing you played a part in it, it's phenomenal just to be able to participate in that. As the advanced project development engineer at TxDOT, I'm responsible for all the projects we have in schematic development. I oversee projects in the preliminary phases of coordination
