Spur 1966
In 2012, the Yandell Street bridge near UTEP was causing problems. Understanding problems and recommending solutions is a critical skill for civil engineers. The bridge encouraged UTEP-bound traffic to enter Sunset Heights, clogging the residential neighborhood. TxDoT’s demolished the bridge and built a new, more versatile bridge connecting Paisano Drive to UTEP via Schuster Avenue. Not only did this solve the traffic problem, Spur 1966, named in honor of Texas Western's 1966 NCAA Basketball Championship, also created a new route connecting the university with the downtown. Lastly, the project added an artistic touch, with the enigmatic sculpture, The Cloud, gracing the roundabout at the juncture of Schuster and the Spur.
