UTEP College of Health Sciences
The week of October 17th is National Transfer Student Week. Join us as we celebrate the stories and successes of our transfer students. Today we are featuring Janet Moncayo, a senior Clinical Laboratory Science major who will graduate this coming spring.
Where did you begin your academic journey?
I started college at El Paso Community College (EPCC).
What sparked your interest in your field?
In high school, I had a biotechnology teacher who introduced me to my field. She inspired me to look into it because it was exactly what I had been looking for – a job in the medical field where the professionals perform scientific testing on patient samples. This was perfect for me because I love science, and I was able to learn how to help doctors make accurate diagnoses to eventually help the patient.
What were your greatest academic challenges during your time at UTEP, and how did you overcome them?
My greatest academic challenge while attending UTEP was managing my time. I had grown accustomed to studying and learning on my own time during the pandemic, so when I had to return to in-person classes and labs, it was a change in pace and atmosphere. In a way, I had to learn how to be a good student again for my face-to-face classes. I overcame this by staying at school (in the library) as long as I could. It helped me discipline myself to get my work done and use my time wisely. It also helps to have an awesome “study buddy” with you, so that you keep each other motivated and working!
Were you involved in student organizations or volunteer activities?
Yes, I am currently in the CLS class of 2023 student organization, and we do participate in many health fairs and volunteer activities. These activities include patient health screenings where we check patient's glucose and cholesterol levels as well as hematocrits, blood types and more!
What are your future academic and career goals?
Currently, my goal is to graduate in May 2023, obtain my certification and start working at one of the many amazing hospitals in the El Paso area. Eventually, while working at one of these hospitals, I may become a preceptor for future UTEP students who study Clinical Laboratory Science, and I will get to share my knowledge and passions with them!
