Health Science Students Lead Effort to Reduce Mental Illness Stigma
On April 26, 2018 UTEP Masters of Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC) students hosted an on-campus forum for students, faculty and community members seeking resources and information about how to overcome the stigma commonly associated with mental illness. MRC student Nathaniel (Nate) Chaney spearheaded the effort, and together with his peers in the MRC program, successfully sought funding for the event from the UTEP Student Government Association. Dr. Emre Umucu, Asst. Professor of Rehabilitation Counseling, was the keynote speaker, providing a lecture on "PTSD and Student Veteran Success." The El Paso chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness also guest presented at the event, sharing strategies with audience members on how to support others in their community with mental illness and how to become more actively engaged in the effort to reduce stigma.
The MRC Program hopes to offer additional outreach sessions on this topic in the future.
