Health Sciences 2018 Women of Mines Awardees
Adriana Avina Corona, a graduating senior in the Health Promotion program, and Crystal Morales, a graduating senior in the Bachelor of Social Work program, both received prestigious designations as 2018 Women of Mines awardees.
The oldest honor that UTEP bestows upon its students, Men and Women of Mines recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding service to the University. Those who are ultimately chosen for this honor must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, have completed at least 90 credit hours, have not received this award before, and demonstrate outstanding “Campus Involvement and Service” in these areas: Student Organizations & Campus Activities, College & Academic Departments, and University-Wide Committees.
While at UTEP, Adriana helped implement a program called “Mujer Saludable, Familia Feliz,” which focuses on holistic substance abuse disorder treatment and HIV prevention among minority women in underserved communities in the region. She also participated in the National College Honor Society Alpha Chi, the Golden Key National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Health Promotion Student Association, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and Eta Sigma Gamma.
Crystal’s passion for advocacy and social justice for her community was put into practice through her work with various social service agencies. She facilitated veteran support groups, worked as an intake processor at the Opportunity Center for the Homeless, and assisted English language learning pre-kindergarten students in UTEP’s Project LEAD, which promotes leadership in English acquisition, academic achievement and development in underserved communities. She was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars at UTEP, the UTEP chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and the Student Association of Social Work.
