SLP Students Serve Children with Hearing Loss at Summer Camp

Graduate student clinicians in the Speech Language Pathology (SLP) Program are participating this week in the Fun with Language and Learning Camp, a special summer program held at St. Paul’s Church in central El Paso that serves children with hearing loss from the ages of three to 13. 

The weeklong camp, sponsored by En Voz Alta and led by director Cathy Chapman, CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVEd., aims to assist  children with hearing loss  to continue developing listening and language skills, as well as social skills.  Throughout the week, SLP student clinicians will be working as camp volunteers, and will gain critical clinical experience in working with children with cochlear implants and hearing aids. SLP students will guide children and their parents through activities including music, arts and crafts and social sessions. Two modes of communication will be used each day – aural/oral and/or Total Communication (voice and sign language). SLP coordinator and clinical supervisor, Gloria Macias-DeFrance, is overseeing SLP student participation in the camp.
