Socorro Independent School District and El Paso Independent Future Educators (TAFE) Hold Annual Competition at UTEP

Approximately 400 students and educators from Socorro ISD and El Paso ISD high schools participated in the regional Educators Rising competition from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, December 7st, 2018, in the College of Education at The University of Texas at E Paso.
The juniors and seniors from SISD high schools competed in such topics as children’s literature, early childhood education, job interviews, lesson planning, and core subject teaching in classrooms in the Education Building. UTEP faculty, staff, and graduate students served as judges for the competition.
The judges rated the students according to the Texas State Standards and Curriculum according to Dahlia Acosta and
College of Education dean Clifton Tanabe, PhD., William Robertson, Ph.D., and Timothy Cashman, PhD., addressed the group during an opening ceremony. Dean Tanabe’s message addressed the need for collaboration among the local school districts and UTEP in developing our future educators.
Winners of the various competitions are advancing to the Texas state competition, where participants will vie for a spot in the national contest June 22-25, 2019, in Dallas, Texas.
Timothy Cashman, Ph.D., professor of curriculum and social studies education served as the competition’s UTEP coordinator. He noted that participation in the annual TAFE competition is rewarding and, at the same time, and an opportunity to strengthen existing partnerships with a local school district.
