About the Liberal Arts Honors Program
The Liberal Arts Honors Program is relatively new, and since it began in 2012 the Program has awarded Liberal Arts Honors to 21 outstanding undergraduates upon their commencement. Several current and former LAHP students have already presented at academic conferences – some of them winning awards for their presentations – and they have engaged in academic pursuits that are not necessarily typical of a regular undergraduate education.
Two of the requirements for students to complete the Program, which is now recognized as an academic minor, are the successful completion of two Theory and Methodology courses and an Honors Project/Thesis. The T&M Courses are designed specifically to introduce students to cross-disciplinary approaches to research and they are restricted to LAHP students only, which allows them to develop close working relationships with the professor(s) and within the student's cohort. The Honors Project/Thesis is typically completed in an independent study course within the student's major, employing the close direction of a mentor faculty member and the approval of the student's chosen faculty committee. Both of these LAHP Minor requirements, especially the Honors Project/Thesis, help to propel students further as they prepare to enter an increasingly competitive atmosphere in graduate school and beyond.
Other requirements for students to complete the Program include the successful completion of three Honors Designated Courses, chosen from of a list of over 100 classes, Internships, and Law School Preparation Institute courses, as well as the completion of an E-Portfolio which documents the student’s many accomplishments in and outside of the classroom. In addition, LAHP students receive the unique opportunity to regularly meet with scholars and professionals who visit the UTEP campus in a private and relaxed setting. The LAHP provides its students with a student lounge where students can study or relax, complete with computers and a printer, a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, snacks and drinks.
Together, all of the LAHP minor requirements and Program benefits serve to better develop an enriching academic experience for LAHP students, preparing them for successful academic and professional careers after graduation.
