About the Liberal Arts Honors Program
The Liberal Arts Honors Program is proud to celebrate its tenth anniversary in the Fall of 2022. In those ten years, about one hundred LAHP students have graduated. LAHP students have conducted independent research, presented their findings at national conferences, and been listed as authors on the published research of their faculty mentors. They have gone on to law school, graduate school, professional schools, have held exciting internships, and found meaningful employment. LAHP students have participated in study abroad programs in a variety of locations and have extended their horizons both mentally and geographically. LAHP Miners are on the move!
The LAHP is an academic minor that fits with any major in the College of Liberal Arts. Students complete several rigorous courses from our approved list. They also complete TWO courses that are reserved for honors students. We call these two courses “Theory and Methodology Courses.” These cross-disciplinary approaches to research are designed to lead students into a “deep dive” into current topics and fascinating research of some of UTEP’s best professors. LAHP students also complete a capstone project before they graduate. The honors capstone is an opportunity to undertake an independent project on a topic designed by an honors student in consultation with her or his faculty mentor. This culminating honors experience gives students a chance to demonstrate their mastery of material in their field and can provide a tangible final UTEP experience to show to employers or graduate admissions committees.
Students in the LAHP are part of a supportive learning community, comprised of other ambitious and hard-working students with big aspirations. Our students have unique opportunities, including the chance to meet in small-group settings with visiting scholars and to compete for scholarships that support study-abroad and study-away opportunities. LAHP students create informal study groups and can join a student organization in which to develop their leadership skills. The LAHP has its own student lounge where students can study or relax, complete with computers and a printer, a refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, snacks and drinks.
Together, all of the LAHP minor requirements and Program benefits serve to better develop an enriching academic experience for LAHP students, preparing them for successful academic and professional careers after graduation.
