Political Science at UTEP
Welcome to our department webpage! Our department is dedicated to providing an outstanding education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, while concurrently producing innovative research in American politics, world politics, and transnational processes. We contribute to the educational enrichment of the El Paso del Norte region and the mission of the university. We possess specialized teaching and research foci in areas such as civil and international conflicts, cross-border cooperation, environmental policy, health policy, international integration, international law, women and politics, democracy and democratization, American judicial politics, politics of the US Presidency, among many others. Some of our faculty also possess teaching and research expertise on particular countries, such as Brazil, China, Mexico, and Peru. Our faculty members possess national and international reputations for publishing research in outstanding and well-ranked academic journals and book publishers.
We are dedicated to outstanding teaching, as evident by the five UT Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Awards won by our faculty. We embrace the UTEP Edge initiative to help our students succeed and include numerous opportunities for research with faculty members, study away trips (such as Model UN, Cuba, and Mexico), internships, and a rigorous curriculum that concentrates on critical thinking, political analysis, and effective communication. Our chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, our Political Science Honor Society, has won numerous “Best Chapter” awards over the past decade, and our students are very active in student organizations, student government, and society and politics more generally.
Our graduate student body in our master’s program is also very diverse, including students who originate not only from our region, but also from around the United States, and also from around the globe, including students in recent years from Australia, Bhutan, China, Colombia, France, India, Mexico, Poland, among others. Our MA program offers an important stepping-stone into doctoral programs, including current or recent students at the following universities: Harvard, Pittsburgh, Arizona State, Houston, Tennessee, Texas A&M, and UT Dallas. We are also very proud of our alumni, many of whom have attained important positions and accomplishments in politics, law, government, business, non-profits, the academe, and in secondary education. If you are a prospective student, we welcome you to explore our programs and have a discussion with us about career options. If you are an alumnus, we welcome you to stay connected with us, and keep us informed of your endeavors and any changes in contact information.
