Talk: Smarter Ballots: Electoral Realism and Reform

Wednesday October 30 1:30 pm UGLC 116
Dr. Jason Maloy, Professor and Kaliste Saloom Endowed Chair in Political Science, University of Louisiana at Lafayette
Democratic elections often fail to deliver genuine accountability, and many people believe that making voters better informed and more attentive is the key to success. Analyzing the problem with realist theory and observational and experimental evidence, however, suggests a different solution: smarter ballots, not smarter voters. The only way to enable voters to avoid lesser-evil elections as well as problems of vote-splitting is to give them more options on the ballot for expressing their vote.
