Ahmad Alkhatib
Professor, Regents’ Distinguished Research Professor, Department of Kinesiology
Ahmad Alkhatib joins The University of Texas at El Paso as an internationally recognized scholar in public health, exercise science, and health nutrition whose work focuses on lifestyle interventions to prevent and manage chronic disease. He earned a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology and Metabolism and a master’s degree in Sport Science from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom and has built a distinguished academic career spanning leadership roles in higher education, healthcare, and public health organizations across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Prior to joining UTEP, Alkhatib served as Professor of Public Health and Life Sciences at Birmingham City University, Director of the Public Health and Preventative Healthcare Doctorate at Teesside University, and held senior academic appointments at institutions including Qatar University, University of Abertay, University of Greenwich, and the University of Taipei. His research examines obesity, diabetes, multimorbidity, healthy aging, nutrition, physical activity, and health equity, and has been supported through major international funding agencies, government partnerships, and large-scale public health initiatives. A fellow of multiple professional societies and an author of an extensive body of scholarly publications, books, and policy contributions, Alkhatib has advised governments, health systems, and international organizations on disease prevention and population health. At UTEP, he looks forward to advancing interdisciplinary research, community engagement, and student success while addressing health disparities and promoting healthier lifestyles across diverse populations.
John C. Begeny
Professor, Department of Psychology
John C. Begeny joins UTEP from North Carolina State University, where he served as a professor of psychology and led an extensive program of research, teaching, and community-engaged scholarship focused on literacy development, academic interventions, and educational equity. A licensed psychologist, his work centers on the design, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to support struggling learners, particularly in reading and mathematics, and he has contributed extensively to the field through numerous peer-reviewed publications, instructional programs, and widely adopted intervention models. Dr. Begeny is also the founder and former leader of a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to research-based educational resources for schools and communities, through which he led large-scale program development, dissemination, and funding efforts. His scholarship and leadership have been recognized with multiple national and international awards, including honors for community-engaged research, global engagement, and educational impact. In addition to his research contributions, he has extensive experience mentoring graduate students, developing innovative curricula, and fostering partnerships across educational systems to enhance student outcomes. Dr. Begeny earned a doctoral degree in school psychology and a master’s degree in school psychology from Syracuse University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and English from Western Michigan University. Soryong Ryan Chae
Professor, Regents’ Distinguished Research Professor. Department of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering
Soryong Ryan Chae joins The University of Texas at El Paso as an internationally recognized scholar in environmental and chemical engineering whose research focuses on advanced water treatment, membrane technologies, environmental sustainability, resource recovery, and clean energy systems. He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from KAIST in South Korea and a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from INHA University. Prior to joining UTEP, Chae served as a professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, where he also led major research initiatives including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Pegasus Program. His academic career has included appointments at the University of Sydney, Duke University, and Hokkaido University, and his research has advanced innovative solutions for water reuse, desalination, PFAS treatment, membrane bioreactors, carbon-neutral technologies, and sustainable resource recovery. An award-winning educator and researcher, Chae has secured significant support from federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Department of Defense, while publishing extensively in leading environmental engineering and water research journals. At UTEP, he looks forward to advancing interdisciplinary research that addresses global water and environmental challenges while preparing students to develop sustainable engineering solutions for the future.

Hugo Jair Escalante
PROFESSOR, Regents’ Distinguished RESEARCH Professor, Department of Computer Science
Hugo Jair Escalante joins The University of Texas at El Paso as an internationally recognized computer scientist whose research focuses on artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, multimodal learning, and automated machine learning (AutoML). He earned a Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Science from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) in Mexico and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. Prior to joining UTEP, Escalante served as a research scientist in the Department of Computer Science at INAOE and held visiting appointments in Mexico, Colombia, and Italy. His scholarly contributions span machine learning, natural language processing, affective computing, image analysis, and multimodal AI, resulting in an extensive record of publications in leading journals and conferences, numerous externally funded research projects, and international leadership roles with organizations including IEEE, IAPR, and ChaLearn. Recognized among the top computer scientists in Mexico, he has received multiple best paper and research awards, served as an editor for premier AI journals, and helped organize major international machine learning and computer vision competitions at venues such as NeurIPS, CVPR, and ICPR. Throughout his career, Escalante has mentored dozens of graduate students and researchers while advancing innovative approaches to trustworthy, explainable, and data-driven artificial intelligence. At UTEP, he looks forward to expanding interdisciplinary research in AI and preparing students to address emerging challenges in intelligent systems and data science.
Marc R. Knecht

Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Dr. Marc R. Knecht joins UTEP from the University of Miami, where he served as Chair and Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Associate Director of the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Biomedical Nanotechnology Institute. Dr. Knecht brings expertise in biomimetic and bio-inspired nanotechnology, with research focused on the synthesis and application of nanomaterials for catalysis, energy, and environmental remediation, as well as understanding structure–function relationships in nanoscale systems. He has held several leadership roles, including Associate Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies. Dr. Knecht earned a Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry from Vanderbilt University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Texas at Austin.
Fujun Lai
Professor, Regents’ Distinguished Research Professor, department of marketing, management, & supply chain
Dr. Fujun Lai joins UTEP from his role as McCarty Distinguished Professor of Operations Management and Information Systems and Professor of Management at the University of Southern Mississippi. His research focuses on smart supply chain management and digital transformation, with extensive contributions examining topics such as supply chain relationships, logistics outsourcing, platform-based economies, and enterprise systems. He has an extensive record of scholarship, including numerous peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Journal of Management Information Systems, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and Information Systems Journal, along with multiple highly cited papers and research awards. In addition to his research, Lai has served in editorial roles for prominent academic journals and has contributed to conference leadership and scholarly service in his field. He earned his Ph.D. in management science from the City University of Hong Kong, along with graduate and undergraduate degrees in engineering economics and mathematics in China.
Zhijie “Jason” Liu
Professor, Regents’ Distinguished RESEARCH Professor, Department of Biological Sciences
Zhijie “Jason” Liu joins UTEP from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he served as a professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine and as a member of the NCI-designated Mays Cancer Center. He is also a CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research. His research focuses on gene regulation, enhancer biology, sex hormone biology, and cancer progression, with particular emphasis on understanding the transcriptional regulatory mechanisms underlying breast and prostate cancers and developing novel therapeutic strategies. Recently, Dr. Liu has also expanded his research program to investigate enhancer assembly and reprogramming mechanisms in other diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. Dr. Liu has led multiple nationally funded research programs as principal investigator, with support from agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society, and has made significant contributions to the field through numerous high-impact publications in leading journals such as Cell, Molecular Cell, and Nature Cell Biology. His work has been recognized with major awards, including the NIH Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award, the ACS Research Scholar Grant, the V Scholar Award, the Susan G. Komen Career Catalyst Research Grant Award, and the CPRIT Award for the Recruitment of First-Time, Tenure-Track Faculty Members. In addition to his research accomplishments, he has contributed to graduate education and training through course leadership, mentorship of doctoral and postdoctoral scholars, and service on national review panels and editorial boards. Dr. Liu earned a doctoral degree in genetics from the University of Georgia, a master’s degree in molecular genetics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Lanzhou University.

Edwin C. Oh joins The University of Texas at El Paso as an internationally recognized researcher whose work spans genomics, neuroscience, bioinformatics, public health, and environmental surveillance. He earned a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed postdoctoral training at Johns Hopkins University and Duke University. Prior to joining UTEP, Oh served as Professor in the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and as Executive Director of the Center for Water Intelligence and Community Health. His research integrates genomic, proteomic, biochemical, and computational approaches to understand disease mechanisms, identify genetic and environmental contributors to human health, and develop innovative tools for disease surveillance and molecular phenotyping. He is widely recognized for pioneering wastewater-based epidemiology programs that have advanced the monitoring of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and public health trends through community-based surveillance. Supported by major funding from agencies including the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Science Foundation, his work has resulted in numerous high-impact publications, patents, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Professor and Department Chair, Department of English
Dr. Vershawn Ashanti Young, who goes by Dr. Vay, joins UTEP from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, where he was the inaugural director and professor of Black Studies from 2020 to 2025. As director, Dr. Vay designed the diploma in anti-racist communication that helps professionals and students increase their communication skills in high stakes, dynamic, intercultural contexts. Dr. Vay’s academic work focuses on African American rhetoric, Black literature, performance studies, and linguistic justice. He is best known for his pioneering research on code meshing, his linguistic neologism to describe the practice of combining two or more dialects, registers or languages in one speech or writing act, such as in his article “Nah, We Straight: An Argument Against Code Switching.
Dr. Vay is an interdisciplinary writer, maintaining a prolific record of scholarship, which includes ten books and numerous peer-reviewed articles. He is widely recognized as a public intellectual, performance artist, and advocate for academic freedom.
He also works in legal and quasi legal contexts as an arbitrator and mediator, helping litigants resolve their high conflict and complex civil cases outside of court. He is a member of several professional organizations, such as the American Bar Association (ABA), American Studies Association (ASA), Modern Language Association (MLA), and Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCC), the largest academic organization of college writing and communication professionals in North America. Dr. Vay chaired CCC from 2017 to 2020.
Dr. Vay holds a Juris Doctor from Mitchell Hamline School of Law and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
elena foulis
associate professor, department of chicano studies, languages, and linguistics
Dr. Elena Foulis joins UTEP from her role as associate professor and director of the Spanish Language Studies Program at Texas A&M University–San Antonio. Her research focuses on U.S. Latina/o/e literature and culture, oral history, and digital humanities, with an emphasis on community engagement, multilingual storytelling, and culturally sustaining pedagogies. She has authored and edited numerous peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and digital humanities projects that center Latina/o/e experiences, including work on oral history archives and community-based scholarship, such as, Working en comunidad: Service-Learning and Community Engagement with U.S. Latinas/os/es (University of Arizona Press, 2024) and Embodied Encuentros: Oral History Archives of Latinas/os/es Experiences (Ohio State University Press, 2026). Foulis has also led interdisciplinary initiatives and digital projects that amplify underrepresented voices and support student-centered learning. She earned her Ph.D. in comparative literature and cultural studies from the University of Arkansas, along with a master’s degree in Spanish from the same institution and a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University.
alwathiqbellah ibrahim

Dr. Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim joins UTEP from The University of Texas at Tyler, where he served as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering and founded and directed the Mechatronics and Energy-Harvesting Laboratory. His research focuses on intelligent biomedical devices, sensor-integrated systems, and energy harvesting technologies, with applications in orthopedic health monitoring, wearable systems, and smart infrastructure. He has led multiple externally funded research projects, including a National Science Foundation CAREER award, and has contributed extensively to the development of MEMS/NEMS-based sensing platforms and self-powered diagnostic systems. Dr. Ibrahim has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and holds multiple patent applications, reflecting his contributions to advancing sensor-enabled technologies for human health and engineering applications. In addition to his research, he has developed curriculum and laboratory-based instruction in areas such as biomechanics and micro-electromechanical systems, while supporting accreditation, strategic planning, and student mentorship initiatives. His work has earned numerous recognitions, including national awards for research, teaching, and mentorship, as well as being recognized among the world's top 2% of researchers in the Stanford–Elsevier rankings. Dr. Ibrahim earned a doctoral and master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Binghamton, and a bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology.
césar augusto melo e silva

César Augusto Melo e Silva joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member in the College of Health Sciences. Originally from Brazil, Melo e Silva brings almost three decades of experience in respiratory care, rehabilitation sciences, and clinical research. He earned his Ph.D. in Medical Sciences and M.S. in Health Sciences from the University of Brasília and completed postdoctoral training in Experimental Medicine at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. Prior to joining UTEP, he served as an associate professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Brasília, where he taught, mentored graduate students, and led research focused on pulmonary rehabilitation, respiratory physiology, sleep-disordered breathing, and cardiopulmonary health. His scholarly work has produced an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications examining respiratory mechanics, pulmonary fibrosis, exercise interventions, intensive care rehabilitation, and obstructive sleep apnea. In addition to his academic appointments, Melo e Silva has maintained an active clinical practice as a physical therapist and founded a pulmonary rehabilitation center dedicated to improving patient outcomes through evidence-based care. At UTEP, he looks forward to advancing research and education that improve respiratory health, rehabilitation outcomes, and quality of life for diverse populations.
Omid Moradian
Associate Professor, Department of Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering
Omid Moradian joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member specializing in geomechanics, rock mechanics, and geotechnical engineering. He earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Université de Sherbrooke in Canada, completed postdoctoral research at both Université de Sherbrooke and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and holds degrees in Mining Engineering from Tarbiat Modares University and Yazd University in Iran. Prior to joining UTEP, Moradian held academic and research appointments at New Mexico Tech, Colorado School of Mines, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), where he taught and conducted research on rock fracture processes, hydraulic fracturing, geomechanics, underground excavations, and seismic monitoring. His scholarship includes numerous publications in leading geomechanics and rock engineering journals, externally funded research projects, and award-winning contributions to understanding rock failure mechanisms, fracture propagation, and subsurface engineering systems. At UTEP, Moradian looks forward to advancing research and student learning in geomechanics, mining engineering, and energy-related geoscience applications while addressing challenges in infrastructure, resource development, and underground engineering.
Jeffrey W. Streicher
Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences
Jeffrey W. Streicher joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member and internationally recognized evolutionary biologist whose research focuses on biodiversity, genomics, systematics, and the evolution of amphibians and reptiles. He earned a Ph.D. in Quantitative Biology from The University of Texas at Arlington, a master’s degree in Systematic and Evolutionary Biology from George Mason University, and a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the same institution. Prior to joining UTEP, Streicher served as Principal Curator and Senior Curator of Amphibians and Reptiles at the Natural History Museum, London, and held research appointments at University College London, the University of Arizona, and The University of Texas at Arlington. His research integrates genomics, phylogenetics, biodiversity discovery, and conservation biology to better understand the origins, evolution, and preservation of global biodiversity, resulting in an extensive record of scholarly publications, international collaborations, and externally funded research projects. In addition to his research accomplishments, Streicher has mentored students and postdoctoral scholars from around the world, served in leadership roles for major scientific societies and journals, and contributed to public engagement initiatives that promote science education and conservation. At UTEP, he looks forward to advancing research and student training in evolutionary biology, genomics, biodiversity science, and conservation while fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world.
min xian
associate professor, department of computer science
Dr. Min Xian joins UTEP from his role as associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Idaho, where he also serves as affiliate faculty in bioinformatics and computational biology. His research focuses on artificial intelligence and machine learning, with particular emphasis on computer vision, deep learning, and trustworthy AI, including applications in medical imaging, materials science, and scientific data analysis. He leads the Machine Intelligence and Data Analytics (MIDA) Lab, where his work advances generative AI, uncertainty quantification, interpretable models, and data-efficient learning approaches. Xian has led and contributed to multiple federally funded research projects supported by agencies such as the Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, and Department of Defense, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in computer vision and biomedical imaging. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Utah State University, along with master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Harbin Institute of Technology.
Fei Xu
Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science
Fei Xu joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member whose research bridges artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, and materials science. She earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Utah State University and previously completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Computer Science in China. Before joining UTEP, Xu served as a Research Scientist and Postdoctoral Associate at Idaho National Laboratory, where she led and contributed to interdisciplinary research applying deep learning, generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, and image analysis to challenges in nuclear materials characterization and advanced manufacturing. Her work has been supported through multiple externally funded research initiatives and has produced publications in leading scientific journals spanning artificial intelligence, materials science, and nuclear engineering. In addition to her research accomplishments, Xu has experience teaching courses in programming, database systems, data structures, algorithms, and computer vision, while mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers in applied AI projects. At UTEP, she looks forward to advancing innovative research in artificial intelligence and data-driven discovery while preparing students to apply emerging computational technologies to complex scientific and engineering challenges.
Enrique G. Alvarado
Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences
Dr. Enrique Alvarado joins UTEP from his role as a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Mathematics at Iowa State University. His research focuses on mathematical data science, applied topology, and geometric measure theory. Prior to his appointment in Iowa, he served as a Krener Assistant Professor at the University of California, Davis, where he taught many undergraduate courses in real analysis, and mentored student research projects. Alvarado has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in Applied and Computational Topology, the Calculus of Variations, and has an active research agenda that integrates geometry and data science methodologies. He earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Washington State University and holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Gonzaga University.
karla armendariz

Dr. Karla Armendariz joins UTEP from The Pennsylvania State University, where she completed a postdoctoral fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Gloria Soto. Her research uses community-engaged and participatory research approaches to develop and evaluate augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) services and interventions for children who use or may benefit from AAC, with a particular focus on multilingual families. She works alongside AAC users, families, and interdisciplinary partners to co-design interventions and resources that address community priorities. Through her research, Dr. Armendariz is committed to preparing the next generation of speech-language pathologists and researchers through hands-on research experiences, interdisciplinary collaboration, and community-engaged scholarship.
lauren barchi

Dr. Lauren Barchi is a multifaceted music director, voice teacher, and educator dedicated to developing confident, expressive musical-theatre performers. She has worked as an adjunct professor at Long Island University and New York University. Lauren holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and an Artist Diploma in Opera from Rutgers University. She received her Master’s in Music in Vocal Performance and Advanced Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from New York University. Her doctoral study examined the musical and cultural significance of mental-health representation in contemporary opera and musical theatre. Dr. Barchi’s ongoing research seeks to explore how performance can challenge stigma and foster social understanding.nicholas a. buoncristiani

Nicholas A. Buoncristiani joins UTEP from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science while completing his doctoral studies in human movement science. His research focuses on performance fatigability, exercise physiology, and occupational health, with particular emphasis on cancer-related fatigue and health outcomes among tactical populations, including firefighters.Dr. Buoncristiani has contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications examining muscle function, fatigue, and recovery and has presented his work at regional and national conferences. His teaching experience includes anatomy and physiology, exercise testing and prescription, and human performance laboratory courses. His research has received external funding, including support for a project he led as principal investigator to examine the prevalence of cancer-related fatigue and the mechanisms underlying fatigability among firefighters in cancer remission.
He completed his Ph.D. in human movement science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned both his master’s degree in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise physiology and his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Western Kentucky University. He is an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS,*D) and Tactical Strength and Conditioning Facilitator (TSAC-F,*D) credentials, both recertified with distinction.
paola a. echave

Paola Andrea Echave, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and an Affiliate Scholar at the Urban Institute. Her scholarship sits at the intersection of population health, migration, and public policy, drawing on rigorous quantitative and qualitative methods. Echave has extensive experience in the design and implementation of large-scale social science and demographic surveys. Her recent research examines how immigration enforcement affects immigrant communities' health, economic, and social well-being, and how public and environmental disasters drive migration, health disparities, and labor exploitation domestically and globally. Echave leads cross-institutional collaboration across Mexico and the United States to develop a labor-trafficking prevention program, and she is part of the 2026–2027 IDEAAL DR2 Fellowship cohort. Her work has appeared in peer-reviewed journals and outlets such as DC News Now, ScienceDaily, Chicago Tribune, and The UK Times. She teaches graduate courses in survey methods, is active in professional service, and has received multiple awards and grants. Previously, at the Urban Institute, she managed the Annual Survey of Refugees. Echave holds a PhD and MA in sociology from Ohio State University and a BA in criminology from the University of New Mexico.mariana grigoruţă

Mariana Grigoruţă joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a biomedical scientist and educator whose research focuses on cancer pharmacology, molecular biology, immunology, and translational biomedical research. She earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Biological Sciences and a Master of Science in Genomic Sciences from the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez and holds a medical degree from Ovidius University in Romania. Prior to joining UTEP, Grigoruţă served as a faculty member at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez and completed postdoctoral training in cancer pharmacology at UTEP’s School of Pharmacy, where she investigated novel therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment. Her research has explored mechanisms of cancer progression, immunotherapy, stress-related biological processes, neurodegenerative disease models, and molecular signaling pathways, resulting in publications in leading biomedical journals and presentations at international conferences, including the American Association for Cancer Research. Recognized as a member of Mexico’s National System of Researchers, she has secured external research funding and mentored undergraduate researchers while teaching courses in immunology, histopathology, proteomics, biochemistry, and genomics. Dr. Sayed-Rzgar Hosseini joins UTEP from his role as a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Indiana State University. His research focuses on computational biology, bioinformatics, and statistical learning, with particular emphasis on cancer systems biology, precision medicine, and interpretable machine learning frameworks. His work integrates deep learning, statistical modeling, and genomic data analysis to develop innovative methods for understanding cancer progression and drug response. Prior to his current role, Hosseini served as a research-track assistant professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and held postdoctoral appointments at the European Bioinformatics Institute and Cancer Research UK. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in computational biology and bioinformatics and has contributed to interdisciplinary research collaborations in academia and industry. Dr. Jie Hua joins UTEP from his role as a postdoctoral researcher at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he conducted research in advanced air mobility and aeroacoustics. His research focuses on Jet noise and unmanned aerial vehicle design, with emphasis on eVTOL systems, propeller optimization, computational fluid dynamics, and noise prediction and control for urban air mobility. He has extensive experience integrating computational modeling, machine learning, and experimental testing, including wind tunnel, acoustic, and flight testing. Prior to his academic career, Hua served as an aerodynamics engineer in industry and founded a UAV technology company focused on logistics and advanced aerial systems. He has authored peer-reviewed journal and conference publications and holds multiple patents related to advanced air mobility system design. Hua earned his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, following a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from The University of Texas at Arlington and a bachelor’s degree in aircraft design and engineering from Zhengzhou University of Aeronautics.

Shruthi Kubatur joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor of Computer Science, specializing in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision. She earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor in Canada, and a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in India. Kubatur’s research focuses on reliable and trustworthy AI systems, with particular emphasis on understanding and preventing failures in autonomous AI agents. She works on trajectory-level analysis of how agent failures develop, rare-event modeling for failures too infrequent to surface in standard evaluation, and causal methods that identify the root cause of a failure rather than its visible symptom. Her research also spans multimodal and vision-language models, efficient foundation models, and computer vision, with an emphasis on developing intelligent systems that operate safely and effectively in real-world environments. Prior to joining UTEP, she held research and leadership positions at Apple, Nikon Research Corporation of America, Berkeley Lights, and AI startup ventures, where she advanced machine learning technologies for imaging systems, spatial intelligence, high-throughput scientific instrumentation, and autonomous AI systems. Dr. Amy McLaughlin Field joins UTEP as an assistant professor in the College of Nursing, where she also serves as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and graduate faculty member. Her academic and clinical work centers on psychiatric and mental health nursing, with expertise spanning mental health across the lifespan, substance use disorders, and psychopharmacology. Field brings extensive clinical experience as a practicing psychiatric nurse practitioner in a variety of hospital and community-based settings, alongside a strong commitment to nursing education and workforce development. Her research interests include mental health outcomes and behavioral health care, including qualitative work on weight loss maintenance in postmenopausal women, as well as studies on emotional intelligence in nursing leadership. She earned her Ph.D. in nursing from The University of Texas at Tyler, a master’s degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing from The University of Texas at Arlington, and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Texas Christian University.

His work examines the effects of landscape change, including forest fragmentation and environmental factors, on biodiversity and conservation outcomes. Martínez-Fonseca brings over two decades of field experience studying endangered bats and small mammals across Central and North America, along with experience in teaching, course development, and international research collaboration. Javier Ramírez Franco joins UTEP from the University of Houston, where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies. His research focuses on 20th and 21st century Latin American and Latinx literature and culture, with particular emphasis on gender, sexuality, and transgender studies, as well as border, immigration, and performance studies. He maintains an active record of peer-reviewed publications on topics such as LGBTQ+ cultural production, machismo, and trauma, and contributes to both academic and public-facing scholarship. Javier Ramírez Franco earned a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Houston, with a concentration in Latin American and Latinx literatures and cultural studies.

Rita Ruelas joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a social work educator, researcher, and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Supervisor with extensive experience in behavioral health, child welfare, family court services, trauma-informed care, and community-based practice. A UTEP alumna, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from The University of Texas at El Paso and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University Worden School of Social Work. Her research focuses on shared and vicarious trauma, resilience, suicide, complicated grief, migrant children, child and family mental health, and the experiences of helping professionals responding to mass violence and public health crises. Ruelas has held leadership and clinical positions across child protective services, psychiatric care, adoption and foster care, family court services, mental health programs, and public education, including service as executive director of the County of El Paso Mental Health Support Services Department. Her scholarship and community work have examined trauma among first responders and social workers, youth recovery from substance use disorders, child advocacy systems, and the experiences of families and college students facing complex challenges. A longtime UTEP instructor and field educator, Ruelas has taught courses in clinical assessment, human behavior, social work practice, administration, and supervision while mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Monica Sanchez-Contreras joins UTEP from the University of Washington, where she was a Senior Research Scientist/Engineer in the Department of Radiology. Her work integrates advanced genomic approaches with experimental models to investigate how genomic instability and somatic mutagenesis contribute to cellular dysfunction, brain aging, and susceptibility to Alzheimer’s Disease and related disorders. She maintains an active research program supported by competitive funding and a strong record of peer-reviewed publications spanning genetics, genomics, neuroscience, and molecular biology. Dr. Wadsworth’s research lies at the intersection of physics, biology, and quantitative imaging, with a focus on understanding how the physical properties of RNA govern cellular organization and function. His laboratory combines advanced microscopy, biophysical measurements, computational image analysis, and molecular biology approaches to investigate RNA-driven phase transitions, biomolecular condensates, and gene regulation.The central goal of his research program is to develop predictive physical frameworks that connect nucleic acid sequence, structure, and intermolecular interactions to emergent material properties and cellular behavior. His work has contributed to the understanding of RNA phase separation, percolation transitions, and the material properties of biomolecular condensates, providing new insights into how RNA organizes biochemical processes in health and disease.
Prior to joining UTEP, Dr. Wadsworth was a postdoctoral fellow at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he studied the phase behavior and material properties of nucleic acids, proteins, and biomolecular condensates. He previously conducted research at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health, where he investigated RNA transcription and developed quantitative imaging approaches for studying gene expression in living cells. He has also developed computational analysis tools and microscopy methods for studying biological systems at the single-molecule level.
Dr. Wadsworth earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where his research focused on quantitative approaches for RNA imaging and transcript analysis.

Dr. Jinliang Wang joins UTEP with over a decade of expertise in structural biology, protein biochemistry, and advanced cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM) from his role as a research associate at the University of Southern California (USC), where he conducted research on structural biology and neurodegenerative diseases. His research focuses on protein biochemistry and high-resolution imaging, with a particular emphasis on using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study multiprotein complexes and disease-related protein aggregation, including tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease. He has contributed to projects involving protein structure–function analysis, high-throughput biosensor assays, integrate AI/ML for accelerated drug discovery and the identification of potential therapeutic targets, and has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in structural biology and neuroscience. At UTEP, Dr. Wang will establish an integrated structural and chemical biology program leveraging AI/ML to decipher the molecular pathology of Alzheimer's disease and related tauopathies. By combining high-resolution cryo-EM with in situ cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), his lab will characterize pathological tau fibrils and their interactions with cellular machinery in unprecedented detail. These structural insights will directly inform the rational design and development of novel therapeutic agents to disrupt and disassemble toxic protein aggregates.Prior to his time at USC, he completed postdoctoral training at the University of Utah School of Medicine, focusing on membrane protein structural determination using cryo-EM. Dr. Wang earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from The University of Texas at El Paso. He also holds an M.Sc. in Regulatory Management from USC, an M.Sc. in Cell Biology from the University of Science and Technology of China, and a B.Sc. in Biotechnology from Hainan University.

Her dissertation examines platform architecture evolution and its impact on complementor strategies and innovation. Xi Wang brings experience in research on platform ecosystems and teaching in business strategy, including serving as an instructor and teaching assistant in MBA and undergraduate courses. She earned a Master of Science in Economics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Nanjing University.

Dr. Erin P. Westeen joins UTEP from her role as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Biology co-sponsored at Arizona State University and Texas A&M University. An evolutionary biologist and herpetologist, her research integrates field and collections-based approaches to understand how environmental variation drives trait evolution and how those traits, in turn, mediate organismal responses and ecological interactions. She earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management from the University of California, Berkeley, where her research on spiny lizards in the Madrean Sky Islands sparked a broader interest in eco-evolutionary dynamics across desert ecosystems. Westeen also holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology with High Honors from the University of Michigan. She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Evolution, Biology Letters, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B, and she is a co-author on the book Sea Turtles to Sidewinders: A Guide to the Most Fascinating Reptiles and Amphibians of the West. She has maintained an active record of peer-reviewed publications and funded research projects and has experience teaching undergraduate courses in Research Methods and Quantitative Psychology. Dr. Wetzel earned her Master of Arts in Social/Health Psychology from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with honors from Florida State University. Using mixed methods such as experiments, surveys, interviews, and eye-tracking, she investigates how message design and media affordances shape user experience, brand trust, and consumer well-being. She received her Ph.D. in Advertising and M.A. in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin, and her B.S. in Advertising from the University of Florida.

Jose “Jacob” Bautista joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Sciences. A UTEP alumnus, Dr. Bautista earned his Doctor of Pharmacy and studied biological sciences at the University. He completed a PGY-1 pharmacy residency at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, followed by a PGY-2 residency in ambulatory care at Parkland Health in Dallas. His clinical experience spans diabetes, cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, infectious disease, oncology, anticoagulation, transitions of care, and medication therapy management. Dr. Bautista’s research and quality-improvement work examines pharmacist-led medication optimization, patient education, medication safety, and evidence-based pharmacy education. His teaching experience also includes case-based instruction, interprofessional simulations, clinical topic discussions, and lectures for pharmacy, physician assistant, and medical learners. He is a licensed pharmacist in Texas and New Mexico. Dr. Bautista is committed to preparing future pharmacists through practical, patient-centered education and to improving medication-related outcomes in the communities he and future pharmacists serve.

Following graduation, Dr. Lazare completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at University Medical Center of El Paso, where she developed expertise across internal medicine, hematology and oncology, infectious diseases, emergency medicine, critical care, and pharmacy administration. Magda V. Alvarado joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a clinician and educator in speech-language pathology with extensive experience serving children with hearing loss, language disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and other communication needs. She earned both a Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies and a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology from The University of Texas at El Paso and also holds an associate degree in vocational nursing. Her professional credentials include the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Texas licensure in speech-language pathology, bilingual certification, and ongoing advanced training in Listening and Spoken Language therapy. Before joining UTEP, Alvarado served as a speech-language pathologist with PDN Children’s Development Center, where she provided early intervention, outpatient therapy, and family-centered services for children with hearing loss, language delays, and autism spectrum disorder. She has collaborated with audiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to support children using cochlear implants and hearing technologies while promoting language development through evidence-based practices. In addition to her clinical work, she has supervised graduate students from UTEP, participated in community hearing screening initiatives, and supported family advocacy programs for children with hearing loss. Dr. George W. Luxbacher joins UTEP from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), where he served in senior leadership roles including Senior Research Mining Engineer and Deputy Associate Director for Mining. Dr. Luxbacher is a mining engineer and consultant currently serving as Principal of MELM Consulting, LLC, with extensive experience across the mining, energy, and environmental sectors. He led major research programs focused on mine safety, health, and technology development and has worked extensively in environmental remediation and regulatory compliance. Dr. Luxbacher earned his Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Mining Engineering from Pennsylvania State University. His professional interests include mine safety and health, environmental remediation, and the implementation of innovative mining technologies. She brings over two decades of professional experience in public accounting, with extensive expertise in federal and state taxation, tax planning, and compliance for individuals, nonprofits, and small businesses. In addition to her teaching role, Smith previously served as a senior tax manager, where she led tax research initiatives and developed training programs for new professionals. Bilingual in German and English, she brings a global perspective to her work with students and colleagues. She is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Texas and has been recognized for her teaching excellence. Valeria Contreras joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, and educator whose work explores stories of identity, place, and belonging, with a particular connection to the U.S.-Mexico border. She earned an MFA with Honors in Film, Creative Producing from Columbia University and a BA with Honors in International Studies with a minor in Visual Arts from The University of Chicago.Before joining UTEP, Contreras developed an award-winning body of work as an independent filmmaker, with projects supported by organizations including The Gotham, Film Independent, the National Association of Latino Independent Producers, Cine Qua Non, and the Producers Guild of America. Her films have screened at festivals internationally, and her current creative practice focuses on borderland narratives and stories across Latin America.
Beyond filmmaking, Contreras has worked across public service, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement throughout the Borderplex region. At UTEP, she draws on her experience in screenwriting, producing, and directing to help students develop the creative, technical, and critical skills needed to tell stories rooted in their communities and shape the future of film and media.

Karla Dryden joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member with extensive experience in international business, supply chain management, logistics, and cross-border operations. She earned both an MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management and bachelor’s degrees in Operations and Supply Chain Management and in Marketing and International Business from The University of Texas at El Paso. With more than 15 years of professional experience across the United States and Mexico, Dryden has held leadership and analytical roles in government, higher education, manufacturing, logistics, and consulting organizations. Most recently, she served as Strategic Project Manager for the City of El Paso International Bridges Department, where she led initiatives supporting international trade, economic development, capital planning, and cross-border commerce. Ashley Gale Vaughan is a doctoral student in legal psychology at The University of Texas at El Paso, where she has served as a graduate researcher and lab manager in the Legal Decision Lab. Her research examines how psychological processes shape legal decision-making, with particular emphasis on jury decision-making, alternative dispute resolution, procedural justice, and perceptions of fairness and legitimacy within the legal system. She uses experimental and quantitative methods to study how individuals understand and respond to legal processes.Vaughan is also a licensed attorney with professional experience in family law, probate, estate planning, and civil litigation. Her legal training and practice inform her interdisciplinary approach to teaching and scholarship, particularly her interest in improving legal education and preparing future attorneys to understand the human dimensions of law and legal decision-making. She also serves as a volunteer mediator in the El Paso community.
Her scholarly work has addressed juror cognition, legal reform, procedural justice, alternative dispute resolution, and mental health in legal contexts. She has taught courses in psychology and law, experimental psychology, research methods, torts, and legal research and writing.

Mitsu Overstreet joins the Department of Art as an Assistant Professor of Practice. His multidisciplinary practice spans UX/UI design, public art, graphic design, digital humanities, and education. With more than 20 years of professional experience, he has created large-scale civic installations and site-specific works throughout the American Southwest and beyond, including permanent installations at the El Paso International Airport and an interactive installation at La Nube Children’s Museum. His artwork has been exhibited at institutions such as the El Paso Museum of Art and the San Antonio Botanical Garden, while his design experience includes user research, accessible digital experiences, visual identity systems, and innovative technology-enhanced learning. Overstreet has presented his creative practice and research at professional conferences and TEDx, and his teaching emphasizes user-centered design, research, prototyping, cultural engagement, and the thoughtful integration of emerging technologies. Luisana Duarte Armendáriz joins UTEP from the University of Connecticut, where she served as an instructor in English and held multiple leadership roles, most recently as assistant director of the Creative Writing Program. Her teaching and research focus on children’s and young adult literature, literary translation, and multimodal composition, with particular attention to the role of language, identity, and translation in shaping lived experience. An accomplished author and translator, her work includes the award-winning middle-grade novel Julieta and the Diamond Enigma and numerous translations of children’s literature across English, Spanish, and Nahuatl, as well as forthcoming publications. She brings extensive experience in program administration and faculty development, including leadership in first-year writing initiatives, professional development programming, and statewide educator support. Her scholarship has been recognized with honors such as the Premio Campoy-Ada Award and the Aetna Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award. Chhaya Katiyar earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez and holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University in India. Katiyar's research focuses on machine learning, deep learning, remote sensing, computer vision, and intelligent sensing systems, with applications spanning hyperspectral image analysis, environmental monitoring, and data-driven decision making. Her work has advanced the development of graph-based and deep neural network models for hyperspectral change detection and classification, including research published in the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing. She has also contributed to interdisciplinary projects involving post-hurricane vegetation assessment in collaboration with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and object tracking supported by NSF funded research initiatives. Dr. Erika Zavala’s scholarship centers on bilingualism, biliteracy, and language education, with a focus on second-language acquisition, Spanish-language development, heritage-language education, and children's literature in Spanish. Her work advances culturally sustaining and equity-driven approaches to language learning, with particular attention to borderlands perspectives and Latinx communities.Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives in bilingual education, Spanish linguistics, and Women's and Gender Studies, Dr. Zavala explores multilingualism, critical consciousness, and teacher preparation for multilingual communities. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and contributed to peer-reviewed publications and edited volumes.
Before her appointment in the Department of Chicano Studies, Languages, and Linguistics, Dr. Zavala served as an adjunct faculty member in UTEP's College of Education, where she taught graduate courses in bilingual and biliteracy education. She prepared future educators to support multilingual learners through research-informed, community-centered, and culturally responsive instructional practices. She also brings extensive experience across K–12 and higher education in curriculum development, online instruction, teacher preparation, and language education.

With more than 14 years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and academic leadership, Zahoor has taught courses in forensic genetics, forensic DNA analysis, biological evidence and serology, forensic medicine, and molecular genetics while coordinating graduate forensic science programs and mentoring master's and doctoral students. Felt joins UTEP from the United States Space Force and Department of the Air Force, where he most recently served as Director of Space Systems Engineering in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Space Acquisition and Integration, and previously as Director of the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a space technology strategist and electrical engineer with more than 20 years of experience in defense aerospace, leading research, development, and acquisition programs across space systems and national security domains. Dr. Felt has directed large-scale portfolios in satellite systems, space control, communications, and geospatial intelligence, securing significant federal funding to advance innovative space capabilities and improve national defense readiness. He earned his Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University. Jerry Krassner, Ph.D., serves as Chief Scientist for the National Security Institute at The University of Texas at El Paso. With more than 50 years of experience in aerospace research and development, he is widely recognized for his expertise in advanced sensors, space technologies, and national security applications. Dr. Krassner is the co-founder and former national chairman of the MASINT Association (formerly ATIA) and has served as a technical advisor to DARPA, IARPA, and the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, in addition to participating in several NATO studies and consulting for leading aerospace organizations. He was the founding Chief Scientist for the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Space and Counterspace Office and has taught continuing education courses in space technology. Throughout his career, he has collaborated extensively with the JASON advisory group on studies related to space technology and national defense and served on the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, supporting initiatives in responsive launch, urban warfare, global strike, and UAV defense. His broad technical background spans projects ranging from undersea warfare to advanced space systems and from fundamental research to -level demonstrations. In addition to his work at UTEP, Dr. Krassner has served on the Board of Regents for the Potomac Institute for Policy system Studies, was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Colorado Boulder, and has been recognized in multiple professional biographical publications, including Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology and American Men and Women of Science. Dr. Asghar Abbasi joins UTEP from his position as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Investigator at The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. His research focuses on immune dysfunction in chronic inflammatory and metabolic diseases and on understanding how exercise rehabilitation modulates immune, metabolic, and physiological responses. His work integrates human translational studies with advanced methodologies, including multi-omics profiling, extracellular vesicle biology, flow cytometry, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, to identify novel biomarkers and uncover mechanisms underlying disease progression and recovery. Dr. Abbasi has led and contributed to multiple federally funded research projects, including those supported by the National Institutes of Health, and has an extensive record of peer-reviewed publications in the fields of Exercise Immunology and Respiratory Medicine. Dr. Edgar Gamero-Mora joined UTEP as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Biological Sciences, where he conducted research on the systematics and evolutionary biology of rotifers. Using aquatic invertebrates as model systems, his research seeks to understand how biodiversity is discovered, maintained, and evolves across freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. His research draws upon integrative taxonomy, phylogenetics, comparative and functional genomics, and molecular biology to uncover biodiversity, reconstruct evolutionary history, and identify the genomic and physiological mechanisms that enable aquatic organisms to adapt, persist, and diversify. Dr. Gamero-Mora has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on integrative taxonomy, molecular systematics, evolutionary biology, comparative physiology, and transcriptomic responses to environmental stress. He has international research experience spanning Mexico, Brazil, and the United States, including postdoctoral research in Mexico and collaborative projects with institutions such as the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Grajeda, Ph.D., is a Research Assistant Professor in Proteomics, Metabolomics, and Lipidomics in the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso, where he leads LC-HR-MS/MS core instrumentation in the Biomolecule Analysis and Omics Unit. He recently completed a Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Idaho and previously earned both a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Montana, graduating summa cum laude. His research explores the development of robust and secure AI systems for high-stakes applications, including uncertainty-aware deep learning models, adversarial machine learning, biomedical image analysis, and physics-informed neural networks. He develops high-performance computing software and investigates magnetic and electronic phenomena such as spintronics, Kondo effects, and correlated electron systems. Dr. Saurav Mallik joins UTEP in the Department of Biological Sciences, while he worked previously as a Research Scientist in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Arizona, and postdoctoral fellow in Harvard Public Health, UTHealth Houston and University of Miami. He earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from Jadavpur University, while he conducted his research in Machine Intelligence Unit, Indian Statistical Institute. His research focuses on bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational biology and artificial intelligence. Dr. Mallik developed various computational models for multi-omics data, cancer classification, and biomarker discovery using machine learning, deep learning and evolutionary computation. His expertise brings innovative approaches for RNAseq/Single cell sequencing analysis, gene regulatory network modeling, epigenetics and precision health especially for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Melanie R Martin Loya joins UTEP from her role as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Davis – MIND Institute, where she conducts research in evidence-based autism care and implementation science. Her community-engaged research focuses on supporting autistic children and their families, particularly those from multilingual backgrounds, as well as professional development for providers. Her work has also contributed to the exploration of ethics and research methodology, and she has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in autism research and applied behavior analysis. Dr. Martin Loya also brings extensive community-based clinical and training experience from her previous work as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, supporting individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities and mentoring practitioners internationally and throughout the Southwest United States, including El Paso. She earned her Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, a master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Ball State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from Lewis & Clark College.

Paul Rafael B. Sabandal, Ph.D. is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Texas at El Paso. His research combines genetics, behavior, and neuroscience to understand the mechanisms that drive brain aging, cognitive decline, and neurodegenerative disease. Using the Drosophila model, he investigates how genetic and environmental factors influence impulsivity, memory, and susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Dr. Sabandal has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and mentors undergraduate and graduate students while expanding research opportunities in the Paso del Norte region. He earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from UTEP.

Dr. David George Strauser joins UTEP from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he worked as a visiting research evaluation specialist. During his tenure at Illinois, he led and participated in evaluation, research, and applied projects related to federally and state-funded workforce development grants for people with disabilities. Strauser’s research focuses on interagency collaboration among disability service providers, people with disabilities transitioning from high school into work, and vocational rehabilitation systems. He has contributed to peer-reviewed publications, national and international conference presentations, and book chapters. Strauser’s research is informed by his professional experience working for people with disabilities in multiple capacities, ranging from direct support to administrative roles. He earned his Ph.D. in health and kinesiology from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a master’s degree in community health from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Hao Wu joins UTEP as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering. His research focuses on data-driven design, reliability modeling, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to prognostics in engineering systems. He has contributed to a growing body of scholarly work in areas such as reliability analysis, uncertainty quantification, and machine learning-enabled design, with publications in leading engineering journals and conferences. Before joining UTEP, Dr. Wu held research associate positions at the University of Alberta and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, as well as engineering roles at MathWorks. Dr. Wu earned a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Anhui University of Science and Technology.

Gang Xu joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a faculty member specializing in statistics, biostatistics, and data science. He earned a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Statistics from the University of Science and Technology of China. Prior to joining UTEP, Xu served as a Research Assistant Professor at UNLV and completed postdoctoral training at Yale University, where his research focused on developing innovative statistical and machine learning methods for analyzing complex biomedical, genetic, environmental, and public health data. His scholarship includes contributions to longitudinal genetic studies, causal inference, environmental health research, wastewater surveillance, and genomics, resulting in publications in leading journals and participation in federally funded research projects supported by the National Institutes of Health. In addition to his research accomplishments, Xu has extensive teaching experience in statistics, mathematics, and data analysis and has developed software tools that support advanced statistical modeling. At UTEP, he looks forward to advancing interdisciplinary research and preparing students to apply statistical and computational methods to address real-world challenges in health, science, and engineering.

Dr. Saqlain Zaman is an Assistant Professor of Research in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso, where he also served as a Graduate Research Associate at the Aerospace Center.His research interests lie at the intersection of advanced materials and manufacturing, with a focus on additive manufacturing, ultra-high-temperature ceramic matrix composites, and multifunctional composite systems designed for extreme environment applications. Dr. Zaman has led federally funded research initiatives in partnership with the Army Research Laboratory, the Department of Energy, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, encompassing multi-material processing, direct ink writing, and continuous fiber composite fabrication.
In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Zaman has served as a course instructor and mentor in mechanical engineering laboratories. His work has been recognized with the Editor's Choice Award and Top Viewed Article designation from the International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology.

Dirk W. Beck joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a scholar in computational neuroscience whose research focuses on the neural mechanisms of decision-making and learning. He is currently completing a Ph.D. in Computational Science at The University of Texas at El Paso, where he previously earned a Master of Science degree and conducts research under the guidance of Alexander Friedman. His work centers on computational and theoretical models of basal ganglia circuits, particularly the striosome and matrix compartments of the striatum, to better understand how the brain processes information, evaluates choices, and guides behavior. His dissertation, A Computational Model of the Cortico-Striosomal-Dopamine Circuit, explores the neural circuitry underlying decision-making and information processing. Prior to pursuing his doctoral studies, Beck spent eight years at Accenture as a PEGA and machine learning specialist, where he designed and deployed artificial intelligence and process automation solutions for Fortune 500 clients in the pharmaceutical, telecommunications, and banking sectors. His scholarly contributions include publications in leading journals such as Nature Communications, Communications Biology, Cell, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, advancing understanding of decision-making, neural circuit dynamics, and computational models of behavior. At UTEP, Beck contributes a unique blend of industry expertise and interdisciplinary research that bridges artificial intelligence, computational modeling, and neuroscience.

Julia Ceniceros joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a scholar in pharmaceutical sciences and medicinal chemistry with a role spanning the School of Pharmacy and Department of Chemistry. She will teach medicinal chemistry to pharmacy students while continuing her research in Dr. Amol Kulkarni’s laboratory where she is applying her expertise in synthetic and medicinal chemistry to design and synthesize novel small molecules targeting inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease pathways with the goal of advancing early-stage drug discovery. She recently earned a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a concentration in Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and holds a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma. Her research has focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel nucleosides and DNA lesions, the structural and biochemical study of DNA repair enzymes, and the development of chemical tools for understanding cellular responses to genetic damage. Working in the laboratory of Dr. Seongmin Lee, she gained expertise in medicinal chemistry, protein biochemistry, crystallography, enzymology, and cell-based assays, contributing to investigations that support early-stage therapeutic development. In addition to her research accomplishments, Ceniceros has taught and mentored students in medicinal chemistry, microbiology, and patient-centered care courses while serving in leadership roles within graduate student organizations and STEM outreach initiatives. At UTEP, she looks forward to advancing research and student engagement in biomedical sciences while inspiring the next generation of scientists through teaching, mentorship, and community outreach.

Alexandra Gordon Smith joins UTEP from Louisiana State University, where she pursued a Doctor of Musical Arts in Oboe Performance and serves as a graduate teaching assistant. She has experience teaching at the collegiate level as an instructor of oboe and double reeds, as well as providing private instruction and leading reed-making and technique courses. Her performance experience includes orchestral work with regional symphonies and conference presentations at national festivals. Alexandra Gordon Smith earned a Master of Music in Oboe Performance from the University of Nevada, Reno, and Bachelor degrees in Music Education and Oboe Performance from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point.

Rebekah D. Jerabek served as an instructor of rhetoric and composition at The University of Texas at El Paso, where she brings over a decade of experience teaching writing at the college level. Her work emphasizes student-centered instruction, inclusive pedagogy, and the development of critical thinking, clarity, and voice in writing. Jerabek teaches courses in rhetoric and writing studies across face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats, and has also developed community-based educational programs for younger students. Her scholarly interests include writing pedagogy, memoir and memory studies, and representations of women and girlhood in literature, and she has contributed to both academic and creative publications. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing (nonfiction) from UTEP and a bachelor’s degree in English from Northwest Missouri State University.
Alejandra Menchaca Guedea

Alejandra Menchaca Guedea joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a counselor educator and mental health professional with extensive experience in trauma-informed care, counselor training, and clinical supervision. She holds a Master of Education in Counseling from Sul Ross State University, a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Iowa, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at Walden University. As a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S), Menchaca Guedea has provided mental health services in the El Paso community for more than a decade, working with survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence as well as individuals living with serious mental illness. In addition to her clinical practice, she serves as a doctoral and teaching assistant at Walden University, where she supports graduate students in counseling practica, internships, multicultural counseling, group counseling, and professional skill development in virtual learning environments. Her professional interests include trauma recovery, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), multicultural counseling, and community mental health. Menchaca Guedea has contributed to professional publications and presentations focused on trauma, survivor advocacy, and counselor wellness, and she has provided specialized services and support for survivors of violence, human trafficking, and community-wide traumatic events in the Borderplex region. At UTEP, she looks forward to preparing future counseling professionals through evidence-based instruction, supervision, and a commitment to compassionate, culturally responsive mental health care.

Ms. Liliana Vacio serves as a Lecturer and Field Experience Coordinator in the Graduate Counseling Programs at The University of Texas at El Paso. She teaches graduate counseling courses and oversees practicum and internship experiences. She also serves as a faculty supervisor for practicum and internship students, supporting clinical skill development, ethical practice, and professional identity formation. Ms. Vacio brings extensive experience in mental health and substance use counseling and maintains an active clinical practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor (LPC-S) and Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). Her work includes collaboration with community partners and the provision of trauma-informed counseling services through both in-person and telehealth modalities. She earned her M.Ed. in Educational Psychology (Concentration in Community Counseling) from The University of Texas at El Paso in 2013 and is bilingual in English and Spanish. Ms. Vacio is an EMDR Certified Therapist and is Level 1 Trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy.

Anthony G. C. Thornton joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a social work educator, clinician, and researcher whose work focuses on child welfare, foster care, family-centered interventions, workforce development, and culturally responsive services for children and families. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Texas and Arizona and is completing a Ph.D. in Social Work at Arizona State University, where his research examines family-based care, child welfare policy, and practices that support positive outcomes for youth and families. Thornton earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Phoenix. Prior to joining UTEP, he served as a research specialist with the Arizona State University Center for Child Wellbeing, a clinical director in community behavioral health programs, and a trainer and educator supporting child welfare and workforce development initiatives. His scholarship includes publications and presentations on foster care, kinship caregiving, family engagement, health disparities, and interdisciplinary approaches to supporting vulnerable youth. In addition to his research and clinical work, Thornton has taught and mentored graduate social work students while developing training programs focused on trauma-informed care, family support, and professional practice. At UTEP, he looks forward to preparing future social workers through innovative teaching, research, and community engagement while advancing practices that strengthen children, families, and communities.

Pradyot Sharma joins UTEP from George Mason University, where he served as an instructor and research assistant in the Department of Economics while completing his doctoral studies. His research focuses on applied microeconomics, with particular emphasis on political economy, regulation, and the economics of digital infrastructure, exploring how technological change and connectivity shape economic opportunity and mobility. His scholarly work includes publications on income mobility and regulation, as well as ongoing research on broadband access, electoral behavior, and economic development. In addition to his research, he has served as instructor of record for courses in intermediate macroeconomics and has supported instruction in econometrics and public policy. Mr. Sharma has presented his research at national conferences and has received multiple fellowships, including support from the Mercatus Center and the Institute for Humane Studies. He earned a master’s degree in economics from George Mason University and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Troy University, and completed his Ph.D. in economics in August 2026.
Lewis (Kuizhi) Wang

Lewis (Kuizhi) Wang joins The University of Texas at El Paso as a scholar of philosophy whose research focuses on modern philosophy, Buddhist philosophy, epistemology, and political thought. He is completing a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Boston University, where his dissertation, Towards a Hybrid Reading of Kant’s Transcendental Idealism, examines the relationship between metaphysics, human knowledge, and the limits of philosophical inquiry. Wang also holds a B.Phil. in Philosophy from the University of Oxford and a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Economics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining UTEP, he was a Visiting Fellow and Research Collaborator with the Princeton Project in Philosophy and Religion at Princeton University and a Visiting Student at Goethe University Frankfurt. His scholarship spans the thought of Kant and Hegel, Buddhist philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, and political philosophy, resulting in publications in leading venues including Synthese, Kant Yearbook, Inquiry, and The Journal of Ethics. An award-winning researcher and educator, Wang has taught courses in modern philosophy, ethics, politics and philosophy, existentialism, and medical ethics while presenting his work at major international conferences and workshops. At UTEP, he looks forward to fostering critical inquiry and advancing research that connects philosophical traditions across cultures while engaging enduring questions about knowledge, justice, and human understanding.
