Making Excellence Inclusive

INCLUSIVE EXCELLENCE AT UTEP

Inclusive Excellence is a framework initiated by the Association of American Colleges and Universities that reframes inclusion and excellence as mutually reinforcing elements that lead to an excellent education for all students. UTEP incorporates Inclusive Excellence in its operations and efforts to provide access to an exceptional education for all students. The long-standing inclusive and equitable practices of staff, faculty, and administrators are integral to UTEP and reflected in our dedication to graduate students prepared to enter a competitive workforce. Central are research- and data-driven analyses that drive continuous improvement in teaching, learning, student experiences, community and business engagement, and research and creative activities.

EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION FOR ALL

A pioneer in providing excellent educational opportunities for all, UTEP's mission of access and excellence dates back to the late 1980's. The Edge, UTEP’s student success framework, provides students with access to diverse, challenging, and enriching practices, pairing opportunities with students' strengths and aspirations.

As America’s leading Hispanic-serving institution, UTEP is known not by whom we exclude, but by whom we include.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

UTEP commits to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the importance of accountability, reflective practices, data-informed and inclusive decision making, and continuous improvement of our policies, procedures, and processes. Administrators, faculty, and staff are integral to defining, reimagining, adapting, modeling, and implementing inclusive excellence from the unique vantage points of their units. We value improving students’ educational experiences through shared knowledge about effective and inclusive teaching practices, student-engaged and equitable learning, and faculty and staff professional development and community building.

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

Serving students with intentionality across all aspects of the institution has earned UTEP recognition as a model institution. UTEP was ranked first in the nation by a Brookings Institution study for its success in achieving both competitive research and student social mobility, and is among the top ten U.S. universities for helping graduates move from family incomes in the bottom 20% to the top 20% according to Washington Monthly. Our one-team approach supports student success through curricular and co-curricular programs, holistic advising, adoption of high-impact practices, promotion of research and creative activities, financial support, and an emphasis on professional development. We work toward understanding and improving university climate for faculty, staff, and students.

INDICATORS OF EXCELLENCE

UTEP established the Center for Metrics-Based Planning to support institutional planning through the integration of metrics and analytics, which are critical to UTEP’s ability to continuously improve how we serve our students, community, and the nation. The indicators of success consider faculty, administrators, staff, and students. Categories of indicators include: institutional composition with respect to race/ethnicity, gender identity, and intersectionality; key transition points with respect to career and students’ progression through their programs; career and professional development opportunities; support structures regarding financial literacy, transfer pathways, and well-being; and satisfaction with respect to climate, culture, and level of collegiality.
