Level Up! 2021
In Summer 2021, ADP MaST Academy Scholars and other Secondary Education minors collaborated to write and present our first ever hybrid STEM camp for entering El Paso High School freshmen. Campers joined three different classrooms, in-person and virtually, to jump into video games and their stories as well as create and program video games of their own design.
Students went beyond playing games and interacted with math and science topics by:
- Recording a stop-motion video of a Pokemon adapting to a new environment
- Solving linear equations to identify the imposter in real-life Among Us
- Designing and constructing a miniature Mario Kart to explore kinematics
- Write quadratic functions to help an Angry Bird knock down a tower of pigs
- Apply their knowledge of body systems to cure patients in a Super Mario Hospital
Students were taken on field trips to Insights El Paso Science Center DinoTracks site followed by swimming at UTEP and a tour around UTEP, visiting the physics and geology departments as well as the Honey Badgers eSports team.
MaST would like to thank ADP, El Paso ISD, and El Paso High School. We would also like to thank MaST Mentor Teachers Roger Winter, Sarah Garcia, and Jesus Loya for providing feedback throughout the planning process and welcoming the scholars and students to El Paso High School.
