UTEP MBA Students Study Business in Tokyo
Twenty-six UTEP MBA students spent spring break in Tokyo studying business inside a different economic and cultural environment.

The Big Picture
Business through a different economic and cultural lens.
Twenty-six UTEP MBA students spent spring break in Tokyo studying business inside a different economic and cultural environment.
Led by Eddie Wei, Ph.D., the March 14–20 faculty-led program combined company visits, executive presentations, and cultural experiences across the city.
Inside the Program
Company visits connected global business with local practice.
Students met with leaders from Toyota, GLOBIS University, Okamura, Gensler, and The Carter Group.
The visits covered the Japanese economy, workplace culture, product development, innovation, and the growing use of artificial intelligence. Students also saw how companies balance global operations with local expectations.
The group also toured the Kewpie mayonnaise factory for a closer look at quality control, consumer health, and the development of a product recognized around the world.
A Lesson from Tokyo
People remember stories—they do not remember facts.

Beyond the Boardroom
Culture gave the business lessons a wider context.
A cooking class, tea ceremony, kimono dressing, and hands-on drumming experience placed the business discussions within a broader cultural context. Together, the company visits and cultural activities gave students a direct look at how business practices reflect the people and places around them.
