The Big Picture
Applications are open for students interested in representing UTEP and the Woody L. Hunt College of Business at the sixth annual HSI Battle of the Brains, taking place Sept. 28–Oct. 2, 2026, in Austin, Texas.
The national competition brings together interdisciplinary student teams from Hispanic-Serving Institutions to solve a real-world business and technology challenge, connect with employers, and explore internship, career, and scholarship opportunities.
Why It Matters
UTEP made its first appearance at the competition in 2025 with a team of six students from the Woody L. Hunt College of Business. Three team members earned more than $9,000 in scholarships from Dell, eBay, and The Home Depot.
The 2026 team will build on that debut by bringing students from different disciplines together for an intensive case competition and week of professional development.
What to Expect
Selected students will participate in:
A 24-hour competition
Teams will analyze a real-world challenge and develop a comprehensive business and technology solution.
A finalist pitch
The top teams will present their solutions to a panel of judges for the national championship.
Company tours and workshops
Students will strengthen their professional skills and learn directly from participating organizations.
Panel discussions and networking
Students will meet professionals, recruiters, and peers from HSIs across the country.

Who Should Apply
Preference will be given to:
- Sophomores and juniors
- Business and engineering majors
Students from other classifications and academic disciplines are still encouraged to apply and will be considered. Strong teams typically combine experience in business strategy, technology, analytics, engineering, design, and communication.
Full participation
What Is Required
Selected team members must attend all programming from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2, including the complete 24-hour competition, and represent UTEP professionally throughout the event.
