Sadok El Ghoul on Building a Life in Research

The Big Picture

Sadok El Ghoul always wanted to become a professor. He was drawn to a career combining research and teaching: the opportunity to create knowledge while helping others understand it.

His first serious research experience came through his undergraduate dissertation. Without easy access to electronic data or even a laptop, El Ghoul commuted to collect information by hand, transferred it into electronic form, and traveled to libraries simply to photocopy academic papers.

“It was painful at times,” he said, “but also exciting and memorable.”

The experience showed him what research demanded without diminishing his interest in it. His MBA dissertation reinforced that intention: the process was difficult, but rewarding enough that he wanted to continue through a Ph.D.

The Long Work

A published paper is the visible end of a process that can require years of data collection, drafting, revision, and rejection.

For El Ghoul, the prospect of seeing that work completed helps sustain him through the uncertainty.

His first major rejection was a dry desk decision that offered little direction for improving the paper. It did, however, teach him resilience and persistence — qualities he considers essential to an academic career.

For doctoral students, that may be one of the least visible parts of becoming a researcher. Ph.D. training requires learning how to continue when an idea does not work, a paper is rejected, or the answer remains uncertain.

Questions across contexts

Governance remains compelling because the answers keep changing.

Corporate governance has remained a central thread throughout El Ghoul's career. Living and working in different countries made him increasingly aware that institutions and culture shape corporate behavior.

A governance practice that succeeds in one environment may function differently in another. That experience became a major driver of his international research.

“Despite an enormous amount of research, we still have not figured out what the best governance practices are or how governance works across different contexts.”

From Student to Researcher

El Ghoul draws a distinction between mastering existing knowledge and becoming prepared to create something new.

A researcher must be curious and adventurous enough to ask questions others have not asked, he said, while possessing the patience and persistence required to pursue the answers.

Research is also a long partnership. Because a project can continue for years, El Ghoul values competence and trustworthiness in an intellectual collaborator.

He joined UTEP because its ambitions, plans for the future, and emphasis on research excellence aligned with what he wanted from the next stage of his career.
