HCM Academy Students Look Beyond the Job Titles at El Paso Electric
A visit to the company’s downtown headquarters gave 15 students a closer look at the people and work behind human resources.

Fifteen students from UTEP’s Human Capital Management Academy visited El Paso Electric’s downtown headquarters Sept. 18 to meet employees and see how work is organized inside the company.
They toured the offices and asked about employees’ roles, their career paths, and what the company looks for in prospective hires.
Inside the Visit
The work behind human resources.
Aimee Saldivar, senior people operations specialist, and Angelica Valdez, human resources operations specialist, spoke with students about HR roles and the paths that can lead to them. Students also learned about the company’s culture, history, and current initiatives.
They connected with professionals working in recruitment, compensation, benefits, training and development, and onboarding. The tour took them through the workplace, including conference rooms where business decisions are made.
Why It Matters
A wider view of the field.
HCM Academy students come from different academic backgrounds. Meeting employees gave them a chance to compare the work they imagine doing with the roles people hold at a local employer.
One student said the visit changed how they viewed El Paso Electric. Hearing from employees across departments showed how different teams contribute to the company and introduced career options the student had not considered.
