The Big Picture
Two scholarships. $8,000 in support.
Hunt College finance student Sergio Cordova received two scholarships as the 2026 HSI Battle of the Brains concluded in Austin last week.
Cordova was one of four recipients of the eBay Scholarship and one of six recipients of the Dell Technologies Scholarship. His scholarships total $8,000 in academic support.
The Final Day
Presenting the work as a team.
Following a 24-hour business case challenge, students prepared to present their work and answer questions.
Before the presentation, event founder Gregory Gibson Jr. encouraged the UTEP team to recognize the work that had brought them there.
“You’re not lucky; you’re good,” Gibson said.
He also urged students to support each other during the presentation and Q&A.
“Y’all came in as a team. You leave as a team,” he said.
Before and After
Twenty-four hours, in his own words.
Before the competition “I feel like an unstoppable force and I genuinely want to see if the lack of sleep will get to me. I am excited to see what I will accomplish within this short time period.”
After the competition “I feel highly accomplished with everything I was able to complete within the time period. The mental fatigue is suffocating but bearable. I remained UNSTOPPABLE!”
Cordova wrote “UNSTOPPABLE” in all caps and finished the reflection with two small hand-drawn faces.
Why It Matters
Employer access and academic support.
The event gave students direct access to employers through company visits and professional conversations, along with practice developing and presenting ideas under pressure. Cordova’s scholarships added financial support for his education.
Gibson’s advice to the students was direct: “Take up space. Bring folks with you.”
