The Big Picture
Business across borders.
UTEP Executive MBA students explored how businesses operate across borders during a faculty-led program in Amsterdam Aug. 28–Sept. 5.
The nine-day experience combined company visits, executive discussions, and cultural activities. Students examined sustainability, supply chains, and global branding while learning how Dutch history and culture shaped the country’s business environment.
Inside the Program
Strategy, supply chains, and global brands.
Company visits and discussions covered several sides of international business:
- AMS Zuid Gemeenten: Students examined Amsterdam’s multicultural business environment and the Netherlands’ appeal to international companies and investors.
- ING: The visit focused on the bank’s sustainability initiatives and their role in international banking.
- Heineken B.V. and the Heineken Experience: Students explored supply chain processes, brand management, and global marketing strategies.
- Gassan Diamonds: Students learned how the Amsterdam company preserves traditional craftsmanship while maintaining an international luxury brand. Discussions also covered responsible sourcing and challenges in the luxury goods industry.
Beyond the Boardroom
History and culture add context.
A guided walking tour and canal cruise introduced students to Amsterdam’s history, architecture, and role in international commerce.
At the Anne Frank House, students learned about World War II and the persecution of Jewish communities.
Guided visits to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum offered another view of Dutch history and culture through works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Vincent van Gogh.
Why It Matters
Understanding a market starts with its people.
Understanding a market also means understanding its people and institutions. For UTEP EMBA students, the faculty-led study abroad program placed company strategy within a broader context.
