UTEP CHS Goes Global - Students Engage in Transformational Moroccan Educational Experience
In early June, a group of 10 students, including three CHS majors, visited Morocco during a 17-day study abroad experience entitled, “Gender, Health and Medicine.” The experience, led by Dr. Maissa Khatib, Assistant Professor of Practice, College of Liberal Arts and CHS alumna (Interdisciplinary Health Sciences PhD Program, 2013), has been offered by UTEP for the last three years.
During their stay in Morocco, students lived with host families and participated in academic and cultural activities designed to increase their understanding of the unique public health climate within the Arab nations, with a specific focus on Moroccan society. Students enrolled in two courses – an Arabic language course offered by a linguistic professor from Moulay Ismael University, and a UTEP Women’s Studies course which is cross listed with HSCI 3320.
As a complement to their academic training, students visited local nonprofit organizations providing education and health awareness to vulnerable populations, and participated in cultural activities, visiting historical sites and participating in a border crossing between Morocco and Spain. Upon completion of the study abroad, students received three semester hour credits and attained a novice level of Arabic language proficiency.
