Graduate Studies Faculty Structures
All UTEP tenure track or tenured faculty are permanent members of the Graduate Faculty. Non-tenure track faculty, adjunct faculty, part time faculty, visiting scholars, UTEP professional staff members, and postdoctoral fellows may apply for temporary membership to the Graduate Faculty to teach graduate level courses or to serve on thesis and dissertation committees, but may not chair thesis or dissertation committees. There are three levels of temporary membership; Click here for further information, and to download an Application for Temporary Membership in the Graduate Faculty.
The UTEP Faculty By-Laws regulate the privileges and responsibilities of all Graduate Faculty. The Bylaws designate responsibility and authority among Graduate Faculty to implement rules of procedure. Accordingly, Graduate Faculty form several administrative bodies that oversee the progressive development and proper implementation of UTEP's graduate programs.
The Graduate Assembly represents and executes the legislative functions of the Graduate Faculty. All Graduate Faculty are automatically members of the Graduate Assembly with voting rights. The Graduate Assembly oversees academic aspects of graduate programs such as students' admission standards, student retention, and program development.
The Graduate Council consisting of 18 elected members (including two from each college) serves as the administrative arm of the Graduate Assembly. The School of Pharmacy does not participate in the Graduate Council. All members, elected and appointed upon recommendation, serve three-year terms.
Each Graduate Program at UTEP forms a Committee of Graduate Studies consisting of all members of Graduate Faculty in each department. These Committees carry the overall responsibility for the operation of graduate programs.

Proposals & Procedures
UTEP encourages progressive and continuous improvement of its academic programs. Each Department assumes responsibility for all graduate programs within its area or interdisciplinary program unit. All official communication and information concerning application for new graduate degree programs and program revisions approved by Department Committees and Chairs go through the Academic Dean to the Head of Graduate School and the Graduate Council. The Graduate School office steers all administrative tasks of the Graduate Council including procedures and communication concerning new graduate programs and program/curriculum revisions.
