Annual Performance Evaluations
At the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), performance management is an ongoing process aimed at fostering continuous growth and improvement. As part of this commitment, all UTEP Faculty, Classified Staff, and Administrative and Professional (A&P) Staff will participate in annual performance evaluations to assess and reflect on their work performance.
Annual performance evaluations are structured as collaborative, two-way discussions between supervisors and employees. This process provides a platform to:
- Review past performance: Reflect on achievements, challenges and contributions over the previous year.
- Set clear goals: Establish performance and development objectives for the year ahead.
- Align expectations: Ensure mutual understanding of job responsibilities, priorities, and performance standards.
The primary purpose of annual evaluations is to enhance job performance, improve work quality, and identify development opportunities that support professional growth. This process not only reinforces accountability but also strengthens the partnership between employees and their supervisors, contributing to UTEP’s overall success.

Probationary Period for classified staff
All Classified employees at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) serve a probationary period during their first 180 days of employment. This probationary period is a critical time for both employees and managers to ensure alignment between performance expectations and actual performance.
Managers are encouraged to conduct formal performance reviews at three key intervals: 45 days to provide initial feedback and address any early challenges, 90 days to assess progress and offer guidance on continued improvement, and 180 days to conduct a final review to determine readiness for continued employment beyond the probationary period.
A completed probationary evaluation form should be submitted to Human Resources for documentation after each review. To obtain the form or seek additional guidance, please contact Employee Relations at employeerelations@utep.edu.
