Frequently Asked Questions: Software
#01: I need certain software installed on my computer. How do I get it?
If the software you need is part of a UTEP license agreement , it may be installed at low- to no-cost on your UTEP-assigned computer(s). If it isn't, and the software is for your instructional/institutional use, your department must purchase it for you. Please contact the TIM to begin the process.
#02: My laptop says I don't have a Microsoft Office license. What do I do?
Your laptop probably hasn't been plugged into the UTEP wired network in several months. Please bring it to the LACIT Computer Lab where the Technology Personnel will assist you in getting the licensed renewed.
#03: My email says that my "mailbox is almost full." How do I fix this?
Faculty and Staff Outlook email on Exchange is restricted to mailboxes of limited GB in size. If your duties have changed (became Dean, Chair, Director, Organizer, etc.) please contact the UTEP Helpdesk helpdesk@utep.edu and request more space for your mailbox, explaining the situation. If they are unable/unwilling to do so and you would like assistance with archiving and deleting old emails, please contact the Technology Personnel for an appointment.
Alternatively, you can send an email to the UTEP Helpdesk helpdesk@utep.edu to request your account is moved to Office 365 so that your mailbox size is increased on the cloud.
#04: I need cloud storage. What service should I use?
Microsoft's OneDrive solution is the official cloud storage for the university. If you need assistance setting up your OneDrive account and folders, please contact the Technology Personnel or the UTEP Helpdesk helpdesk@utep.edu.
You can use other cloud storage services (Dropbox, Box, etc.) but keep in mind that CONFIDENTIAL data CANNOT BE STORED on those services per UT System regulations and UTEP requires you to store UTEP-critical data on OneDrive. Please visit the Data Classification section in the Policies page of the Information Security section for details.
#05: I need to create PDFs. How do I do that?
Most Office applications like Word, PowerPoint, etc. have the option to "Save As -> PDF." If you need assistance, please contact the Technology Personnel and they'll be glad to show you how. If you need more functionality (such as form creation), you may be able to install Adobe Acrobat 11 on your computer by using "Software Center" in Windows or "Self Service" in macOS. Contact the Technology Personnel for assistance.
