Diana Natalicio was a pioneering leader in postsecondary education wholly committed to elevating both excellence and access for all students, including those from underserved communities. Her steadfast belief that talent is everywhere led her to champion meaningful opportunities for all students to succeed. Under her leadership, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) became a national model for demonstrating how universities can be engines of social mobility. In fact, UTEP is currently the only university in the United States that offers access to all qualified students and is among the nation's most highly research active institutions.
The Diana Natalicio Institute builds on UTEP's pioneering legacy by advancing research and practices that draw on knowledge and hands-on experience grounded in research from broad-access and Hispanic-Serving Institutions to advance student success. Established in 2021, the Institute is shaping the future of higher education by expanding on Dr. Natalicio’s enduring vision for the transformational impact of higher education.
For years, the strategies and practices implemented by Hispanic-Serving and other broad access institutions have had limited exposure. Today, these types of institutions and their student populations are more representative of our nation’s population, yet their approaches to increase student success haven’t received enough attention.
The Diana Natalicio Institute is changing that by serving as a knowledge center that furthers rigorous research, applies evidence-based strategies, and brings together scholars, administrators and leaders to center access and student success as the future of higher education. Our focus on actionable knowledge development, broad-based application of effective practices, and community impact is helping drive excellence and improve outcomes at more institutions of higher education.
We uncover evidence-based practices by conducting research to identify the most effective approaches to student success.
