Celebrating the Science and Service Behind the Lab

As part of Pharmacy Month, the UTEP School of Pharmacy organizes a week of activities in appreciation and celebration of pharmaceutical careers and the important work provided by these professionals. From promoting safe medication use to paving the way in healthcare innovation, Pharmacy Week acknowledges the outstanding contributions of pharmacists in our community and celebrates UTEP students who are pursuing their career in pharmacy.

Pharmacy Week 2024 will take place Oct. 21-25, featuring activities that inspire, educate and bond students together. These events provide opportunities for them to find greater appreciation and celebrate the figures that paved the way for them. The activities include the IDEAL Pharmacy Council Halloween Giveaway, Student Excellence Team Mixer, Chalk the Campbell Block, the Affirmation Wall and Barry Coleman Day.

Barry Coleman Day

During October, the UTEP School of Pharmacy celebrates and honors the life of Barry Coleman, a longtime El Paso pharmacist and advocate of the profession. Through his efforts, he played a major part in the UTEP pharmacy program opening its doors as a cooperative program with The University of Texas at Austin in 1999. The need to close the gap between patients and pharmacists created a new goal: advocating for the opening of School of Pharmacy at UTEP.

Barry Coleman created an endowment at UTEP and rallied support until the School of Pharmacy was approved in July 2015, just two months after his passing. His dedication to pharmacy education and contributions to El Paso, UTEP and the pharmacy program is now observed during the School of Pharmacy’s weeklong annual celebration. 

In honor of Coleman, faculty, students and staff at the UTEP School of Pharmacy wear vibrant bowties, his well-known signature style, on Barry Coleman Day, which serves as a reminder of hard work and passion to serve the community.

Tuesday, Oct. 22: Student Excellence Team (SET) – SET Mixer, Campbell Room 211

Wednesday, Oct. 23: OSA and SET – Chalk the Campbell Block, outside walkway.

Thursday, Oct. 24: Dean’s Office – Barry Coleman Day, Campbell Room 211

Friday, Oct. 25: Last day of affirmation wall – Affirmation Wall will be up from Oct 14 -25, Campbell Commons Area
